CITY OF LONDON STATEMENT

CITY OF LONDON STATEMENT BAGS TO THE NINES ORANGE WINES KIWI SAFE HAVEN SCHOOL DAZE Plus, Shanghai’s Artscape; Singapore’s Swing; Sydney’s New Shine; and much more W INTER 2017 Editor FROM THE C H R I S T I A N S C H W A L B A C H It is a badge we carry around most of our lives. An affiliation that informs our early years right through to adulthood – imbuing us with the foundations, credentials, tools, access and influence that help us to excel in everything from the world of interpersonal relations to the heights of business success and social prowess years later. It is our education, and where we have boarded and schooled – whether it is at home or abroad – says volumes about the orbits in which we circulate, the company we keep, the outlooks we maintain, the opinions we have and so much more. Our schools are, in effect, the incubators that inform many of the decisions, directions and diversions that arise in our lives and last for decades, if not generations. For parents whose youngsters are of an age at which considerations pertaining to study are at the forefront, choosing to attend the right school, college or university in order to have the right toolkit, aptitude and dexterity for their children’s success has never been more important. It is one of the most crucial decisions that we, as parents, make – and one with large financial consequences for both us and our kids. Which is why in this edition of Centurion, we have dedicated a comprehensive feature to the situation with boarding schools internationally, hearing from headmasters and educators directly about the state of schooling and how this rarefied academic world is changing from when we ourselves attended. The feature, written by Josh Sims, starts on page 62. We hope you benefit from its findings and enjoy the rest of the stories we have curated in this issue of the magazine. THE WATCH BLACK This issue’s cover features a pattern inspired by a Lapland massif and engraved in Damascus steel by Swedish watchmakers GoS.
