By Rachel Ingram PHOTO © ROSSINAVI Once dismissed as mere tugboats, catamarans evolved into leisure boats for sun-seeking tourists in the tropical waters of the Caribbean. Now, the multihulled craft is going through another phase of transformation and is growing on a much larger superyacht scale. Leading European shipyards, including Rossinavi, are building on the work of smaller, specialist builders and reviving their multihull heritage. “Our history with catamarans dates back to the second half of the 1980s, when we were building passenger vessels,” says Federico Rossi, COO of Rossinavi. “After that, the production of catamarans in-house stopped for a while and the yachting market seemed to have forgotten about these vessels, favouring monohulls. We want to reopen this market.” In 2022, the Italian yard announced the construction of Sea Cat, a 43m hybrid catamaran powered by its innovative eco-friendly BluE CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM 37
