Visiting the Andalusian capital for the annual Feria de Abril, a week-long festival featuring eating, drinking, dancing and elaborate costumes, she “fell in love with everything – the light, the colours, the people, the mood. It feels as if Sevillians have perfected the recipe for how to live well, and we could all learn from them.” Alexandra Kirkman “Sri Lanka’s exoticism is almost otherworldly, and impossibly seductive,” says Kirkman, who penned Return to Splendour (p62). “Before my first visit years ago, I envisioned a kind of Xanadu, scattered with leopards and sapphires, and I wasn’t that far off. Everyone I’ve met in my travels there since says the same thing: ‘This place is incredible – we’re going home to tell all our friends they need to come here.’ I couldn’t agree more.” A travel journalist for more than 20 years, she lives in New York City.
