Blackbook Futurescape

Blackbook Futurescape costs ,495 plus a monthly subscription plan, can roll with any trend top trainers invent next. Or as Putnam put it, “We know that we can’t predict the future, so we’ve built a platform that allows us to react to it as quickly as possible.” Mirror is not alone in the wall-mounted workout market. A compact machine that says it packs a weight room’s worth of equipment through the use of electromagnetic resistance, Tonal was created by Aly Orady, who designed supercomputing and telecom gear for 15 years before he turned his attention to the gym (tonal.com). Tonal, which counts Serena Williams among its investors, was created to “take the guesswork out of strength training” by coaching users the way a personal trainer would. The ,995 machine (which can simulate up to 90 kilograms of weight via retractable arms and pulleys) offers multiweek, goal-focused workout series as part of its monthly subscription plan. Revitalising the at-home sweat session is not exactly reinventing the wheel. “We watched our moms work out to Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons, and I remember my grandfather had little booklets by Jack LaLanne that he would work out to,” obé fitness cofounder Mark Mullett says of himself and Ashley Mills, who created obé, a fitnesscentred streaming service, in an attempt to combine roll-outof-bed convenience with the pumped-up sense of community of a traditional group class (obefitness.com). And with no equipment needed and a monthly subscription fee, it definitely ranks as the most approachable new offering in the category. Obé offers cardio, strength and flexibility classes, on demand and live-streamed daily. “The live element is so important because when you hear your name called out, and you’re surrounded by a community that you’ve gotten to know online,” says Mills, “there really is nothing that’s more powerful.” –Annie Davidson Turn on, Tune in, Do Away With Stress – Forever? With just 30 minutes and a headset, NuCalm aims to make you anxiety-free O ne blustery spring afternoon I took the subway uptown to ReCover, a fitness and wellness studio housed in a nondescript office building a block south of New York’s Penn Station. I was there to engage in some next-level relaxation with NuCalm, a ,695 system (or for 30 minutes at ReCover) that has been cleared by the FDA to treat anxiety, insomnia and depression by using binaural beats to channel brainwaves into their most blissed-out state. You may already know about binaural beats. They’re an auditory phenomenon in which sounds at two slightly different frequencies are played in either ear: the brain, at least hypothetically, finds the differential and matches that frequency. NuCalm has been used by dozens of professional sports teams, by dental and plastic surgery offices and by select branches of the military. Soon the devices will be available in club lounges and first-class cabins of a major airline (which one is still a secret). “I haven’t had jet lag in nine years,” brags Jim Poole, president and CEO of Solace Lifesciences, NuCalm’s parent company, who says he travels constantly. NuCalm has also made him “a better human being”. At ReCover, I was given a sleep mask and headphones connected to a nearby iPad, an ointment to apply to my neck and a pair of electrodes to affix on top. For the next half hour, I floated along to rainforest sounds in a sort of leaden semi-wakefulness, emerging a touch queasy but not at all groggy. What just happened? Poole explains that it all comes down to the autonomic nervous system, which comprises a sympathetic branch, governing fight-orflight impulses and a parasympathetic › 18 CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM
