C O N T R I B U T O R S WINTER 2021 ANN ABEL “The strange thing is that I didn’t appreciate New Mexico at all when I was growing up there,” says the Albuquerqueborn author of Home on the Range (p18), who travelled back to her home state from her current home in Portugal to experience Vermejo, a unique ecotourism project in the state’s awe-inspiring northern reaches. “It was only after living away for 25 years, and circling the globe as a travel journalist, that I came to realise just how special it is.” JAMES AUSTIN MURRAY The NYC-based painter behind this edition’s cover art prefers working with ivory black. “It is one of the very oldest pigments humans have used to make artwork; it absorbs the full spectrum of light, so any ‘colour’ you see is a reflection of that colour in the space where the painting is. It reminds me that all colour is just perceived, and it is how our brains read light reflected. It’s also just so damned sexy!” Murray’s work has been the subject of international exhibitions from Singapore to Monaco.
