Summer

Summer Style The season’s key menswear pieces come in a variety of guises. Elisa Vallata breaks down the essentials UNIFORM APPEAL Vertical stripes are back this season and a tradition-steeped garment such as the boating blazer in this bold pattern couldn’t be more contemporary. In the late 19th century, when this classic jacket was introduced in the university rowing clubs of Oxford and Cambridge, racing teams wore it in different colours in order to be more recognisable for fans viewing boat races from the banks. It was when the members of the Lady Margaret Boat Club of St John’s College, Cambridge, opted for a blazing bright crimson version of it that this jacket became known as a “blazer”. Soon afterwards, stripes in all manner of bold colour combinations began transforming this statement piece into what is now a wardrobe essential. FIRST BLUSH One thing is clear this season: there is pink and then more pink. A hue many men traditionally eschew is having a big moment right now and it comes in its variations: from soft and pale to rich and dusty. Maybe that’s why fashion insiders have decided simply to scall it “Millennial Pink”. As with everything, small doses are recommended. Pink is, after all, a colour which is simple to combine and takes easily to accents.
