Bossa Nova: BEBEL

Bossa Nova: BEBEL GILBERTO The softly-softly younger cousin of samba, Bossa Nova is a quintessentially Brazilian music genre whose roots can be traced back to the beachfront Rio de Janeiro neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema in the 1950s. Bossa Nova has been proliferating ever since, with each generation adding its own twist on a style marked by gentle, sophisticated vocals, unconventional chords and upbeat lyrics. The iconic song ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ earned Bebel Gilberto’s father, João Gilberto, a Grammy in 1964, and would become the genre’s most beloved export, but Brazil’s contemporary Bossa Nova scene continues to flourish at home and abroad. Since the release of the 2000 album Tanto Tempo, in which Bebel Gilberto debuted her trademark style of electronic bossa nova, she has released a number of albums, including 2020’s Grammy-nominated Agora.
