Dance CARLOS ACOSTA Carlos Acosta is the most famous ballet dancer of his generation. His talent, dedication and searing charisma have propelled him from the stages of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world into the wider public’s consciousness. In the rarefied world of ballet, his success story is even more remarkable: a kid from the backstreets of Havana learns ballet and becomes its biggest star. His performances, most notably during Le Corsaire, drew such acclaim for their poetic intensity and technical brilliance that audience members were heard to shout out their admiration mid-performance, shattering the genteel decorum of what was traditionally expected. The world of dance had a new name to add to the pantheon alongside the greats such as Nijinsky and Nureyev. After retiring from London’s Royal Ballet where he was the principal guest artist, he formed his own dance company, Acosta Danza, whose repertoire celebrates classical, contemporary and Cuban influences.
