By Angelo Colombo Electric mobility has never been more relevant, both on land and at sea. And though many of the headlinedrawing innovations are found on large scales – cruise ships with thousands of passengers and automobiles with factory runs of millions – it is the humble tender, with its remarkable balance of speed and power, that is bringing about advances with some of the most groundbreaking potential. Electric propulsion in all sectors is driven by the desire to be less dependent on hydrocarbons. This means being able to exploit energy produced from renewable sources such as photovoltaic, wind and geothermal, among others. The connection with reduced environmental impact has certainly encouraged public enthusiasm for replacing traditional combustion engines with electric propulsion – but it is not the only reason. Electric motors, especially those in the latest generation, offer additional benefits: they often weigh less, are quieter and offer higher engine torque at the start of rotation.
