Contributors Gisela Williams “Le Doyenné is the kind of place where you could believe that you are visiting the glamorous but cosy country house of friends,” says Williams, who travelled from Berlin to report on chefs James Henry and Shaun Kelly’s locavore restaurant and guesthouse on a historic estate outside Paris for Full Transparency (p14). “Before being seated, guests sit around a big open fireplace eating thoughtfully curated hors d’oeuvres, and it’s not unusual for independent groups of diners to end up having dessert together.” Emma Love The London-based writer of Lost & Found (p32) has always been fascinated by the stories of makers and was delighted to see so many represented at Bard, a gallery and shop in Edinburgh that showcases the artistry of Scotland’s most talented craftspeople. “Whether it’s harvesting seaweed, repurposing plastic waste from the ocean or using local sheep’s wool, the pieces on show at Bard are rooted in Scotland. It’s a really exciting addition to the city’s retail/gallery scene.” Chloe Sachdev Mary Holland The South African, NYC-based writer is always at the top of a trend: in Cape Town in Bloom (p52) she takes the pulse of a creative tidal wave gripping the country’s oldest city. But that’s not all she discovered: “Capetonians have caught on to coldwater swimming. Head down to one of the tidal pools along the Atlantic Seaboard any morning of the week and you’ll find people bathing in water well below 13°C. My advice? Join in, then warm up with a flat white at one of the oceanfront coffee shops.” “‘Sustainability’ and ‘eco-conscious’ are words often bandied about, but on Kangaroo Island, there is a real sense of purpose,” says the Sydneybased journalist, who journeyed to the Great Australian Bight to pen Isle of Wonders (p20). “After the destruction of the 2019/20 bushfires that engulfed most of the island, the community laced up their boots and have worked tirelessly to educate a new breed of conscientious traveller. The result is an island that feels like a blueprint for future travel.” Ivan Carvalho “Milan doesn’t reveal its beauty so easily to outsiders,” admits Carvalho, the Milan-based journalist who spoke to American fashion designer Brett Johnson in his adopted hometown for Milan à la Mode (p39). “You need to explore and make an effort. Many of its entryways are quite stunning with stone paving, glass and wood detailing as well as courtyards with gardens. It’s an understated charm. The same goes for eating out.
