Centurion Singapore Autumn 2022

|Places| around the Center include Naro (instagram.com/ naro.nyc), from the team behind the two-Michelinstarred Atomix, and Le Rock (lerocknyc.com), by the Frenchette team. STAY Hotels have sprung up across the city, but it’s the NoMad area that’s seen some of the shiniest new offerings. In a polished new glass building – now one of the tallest in the area – the Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad (ritzcarlton.com) opened its doors with a 632sq m spa and fitness centre and restaurants and bars by Michelin-starred chef José Andrés. The slick guest rooms are swathed in shades of bronze and gold and have views from the Empire State Building all the way to the Statue of Liberty. Around the corner is the Fifth Avenue Hotel (thefifthavenuehotel.com), which is split between a striking new glass tower and a grand mansion, a former home and carriage house. Designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the busy interior is all bright intricate wallpaper, antique mirror-panelled walls and jewel-toned furniture. The restaurants, which include a glass conservatory and a garden as well as a wine vault for cosy dinners, are directed by chef Andrew Carmellini (of Carne Mare). In NoMad, the openings don’t stop there. “The city has been achieving record occupancy,” says The Ned’s Gareth Banner (thened.com), which opened in the space of the former NoMad Hotel near Madison Park. It’s the first Ned outpost to be unveiled in North America, and already, London-based members have been whizzing across the pond for a peek. And why wouldn’t they? There’s plenty to experience inside this moody, glamorous space, including Cecconi’s restaurant, an art collection of more than 150 pieces and membership-only spaces like the rooftop terrace. Another Ned (club, not hotel) will open in the Stock Exchange building in the financial district in early 2024. PHOTOS CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: ALICE GAO, NATALIE BLACK, © BODE 20 CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM

Set in a former bank building from 1912, the hotel has a grand lobby with ornate vaulted ceilings and guest rooms with baths that overlook the city. One of the hotel’s biggest draws is the restaurant, Corner Bar, and cocktail bar Lobby Lounge, located in a restored former bank-teller room, both from Ignacio Mattos. For the uptown crowd, Park Lane (parklanenewyork.com) has opened on the edge of Central Park on Billionaires’ Row. Overhauled by design studio Yabu Pushelberg, the hotel feels like an extension of the park, with large, park-facing windows and woodland wallpaper and murals that invite the outside in. At the hotel’s Harry’s New York Bar, you can grab a quintessential NYC meal: a great burger and a cold Martini. “[We’ve] carried through that old New York charm,” says Prince A Sanders, managing director. A block away, the highly anticipated Aman (aman. com) has finally been unveiled in the 100-year-old refurbished Crown Building – the years of anticipation have been worth the wait, with rooms priced at the very highest end. Last but not least, on the other edge of Manhattan along the waterfront in Battery Park, Casa Cipriani ( cipriani.com) opened in the Beaux-Arts style Battery Maritime Building. There are 47 rooms filled with slick, lacquered-mahogany furniture and racing-green walls, as well as a members’ club, a 1,400sq m health and wellness floor, and vibey jazz club. SHOP Despite having launched her brand 21 years ago, it was only in 2021 when Mara Hoffman (marahoffman. com) opened her first bricks-and-mortar in SoHo. The designer, who has become known for her beachwear and feminine silhouettes, has also turned her focus to producing more responsible items with natural, recycled and organic fibres. The store reflects that ethos with its abundance of plants and a custom woodenframed mirror draped in palm fibres. One-off vintage pieces are also on sale. Unsurprising, because antique pieces and fabrics are gathering interest in the city. Bode (bodenewyork.com) is one of the brands that’s doing some of the most compelling pieces, with a collection of customised pieces from historical and domestic textiles. The menswear specialist opened its first showroom in the Lower Eastside in 2019 in a space with coffee-stained wood panelling and a 19thcentury fountain. Shopping here is like sifting through a rare treasure box, where shirts and quilted jackets are one of a kind. The city has also seen an influx of concept stores from more well-known brands. At Salvatore Ferragamo’s new flexible concept space in SoHo (ferragamo.com), customers can design personalised sneakers through a custom hologram programme. Audemars Piguet also unveiled a new concept store in Chelsea called AP House (audemarspiguet.com). Watch lovers can shop, browse the on-site library and museum – showcasing historic timepieces on loan from Switzerland – or take a break on the soft grey couches next to a fireplace in the lounge. Shopping, eating and drinking non-stop is great, but every New Yorker knows you need pockets of peace in a city that never sleeps.
