PHOTO TARAN WILKHU Carefully transporting a painting in Cromwell Place, a new, multigallery space in London’s South Kensington U ntil the pandemic changed everything, summer was the season when, fresh from the vernissage at Venice, the art world decamped to Switzerland for Art Basel. In 2019, it drew 93,000 visitors from more than 80 countries, and 290 galleries exhibited. As Hauser & Wirth’s president and co-founder, Iwan Wirth, said that year: “Nothing can replace the experience and energy” of the world’s most important contemporary art fair. But that was then. The 50th-anniversary edition of Art Basel, which should have taken place in June 2020, was postponed and then cancelled, along with almost twothirds of the 365 or so art fairs that used to take place annually, which accounted for half, sometimes as much as 70 per cent, of a dealer’s annual income. › CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM 51
