|Places| A Sea Junior suite, like all the hotel’s rooms, has a time-capsule allure – without foregoing any mod cons; below: Mamula’s bucolic pool area Speaking of which: stunning panoramic views are everywhere. Croatia’s Prevlaka peninsula lies to the west; Herceg Novi inside the bay to the north; Luštica peninsula backed by the rocky heights of Mount Lovcen ´ to the east; and southwards the infinite blue seascape beckons. A world unto its own, Mamula is incomparable to the region’s other luxury resorts. Designer Piotr Wisniewski of WeStudio took a holistic approach so that the various spaces within the fortress resonate with each other. “We’ve created a place where guests feel comfortable and safe. We settled on natural, organic, breathing materials like wood, stone and natural fabrics – they embody nature and the authenticity that comes with it.” Creating that feeling of peace is necessary because there is a darker side to Mamula. For 18 months during World War Two, the island-fortress was an Italian-run prison, Campo Mamula, where hundreds of anti-fascists and civilians from the region were held, and where many lost their lives. Out of respect for the past and to honour those who perished, Mamula will have a memorial gallery, due to complete this summer. “The concept was devised by a team consisting of local experts in fortifications, architecture and history as well as representatives of the local community, including veterans’ associations and descendants of people who were imprisoned during the Second World War,” explains conservation architect Katarina Nikolic. ´ General manager Henning Schaub has encouraged locals to contribute family photos and significant artefacts to the exhibition to preserve the memories of their loved ones. “The fact that the fortress was used as a wartime jail brought this remarkable place into disrepute. The hotel does not hide this fact. The idea of creating a hotel here provided the opportunity to restore this historical building, preserve the original architecture and give this place a more positive future,” adds Wisniewski. “The arch, the prevalent motif of the original fort structure, is a symbol of strength and support, but also of renewal and openness.” mamulaisland.com PHOTOS MARK ANTHONY FOX 32 CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM
