BLACKBOOK POSTCARD

BLACKBOOK POSTCARD Clockwise from left: the warehouse-chic scene at 100 Mile Table Café; the raw-boned Farm and wooden entrance sign, below THE MILK BAR OFFERS ”DUDE FOOD” (TRANSLATION: BURGERS, GUMBO), OLD-SCHOOL MILKSHAKES AND FINE GELATO Surfing at dawn along the shores of Cabarita Beach them up for breakfast weekdays alongside cumin- and cardamomlaced lassis, freshly squeezed bloodorange juice and hot chocolate spiked with coconut cream. The roadside sign declaring Brunswick Heads is the home of “simple pleasures” is slightly misleading now that Astrid McCormack and Josh Lewis have opened Fleet (+61 2 6685 1363; 2/16 The Terrace, Brunswick Heads), a sophisticated small bar and eatery whose 20 seats are among the most sought-after in the district. McCormack and Noma alumnus Lewis hail from Victoria, where they ran former Australian regional restaurant of the year Loam. They bring their exceptional sense of dining and drinking to this tiny space of Tasmanian oak bar stools and covetable ceramics by Bangalow artist Anna-Karina Elias. At the other end of the gastronomic scale – closer to the simple pleasures that the road sign promises – neighbouring Milk Bar (milkbarbrunswickheads.com.au) offers “dude food” (translation: burgers, gumbo), old-school milkshakes and fine gelato by Byron Bay’s In the Pink. Back at Cabarita, Halcyon’s in-house restaurant Paper Daisy has a sunny, Hamptons-esque vibe with its wicker and white decor, poolside seating and the faint thunder of constantly crashing waves. Acclaimed chef Ben Devlin’s sharing menu is a please-all affair that proposes classic comfort foods such as dryaged beef with beans and dripping alongside more innovative offerings – South Australian oysters warmed delicately over charcoal and seasoned with pickled peppers, perhaps, or flame-tailed snapper chargrilled in paperbark with seaweed. The Italian-accented wine list is equally appealing and is a toothsome reminder of just how cosmopolitan this stretch of coastline has become. ♦ FROM TOP: KATE HOLMES (3), © HALCYON HOUSE 40 DEPARTURES-INTERNATIONAL.COM CONTACT PLATINUM CARD SERVICE FOR BOOKINGS
