18 DEPARTURES SPRING 2018 Contributors In This Issue Elena Rendina “Surreal Splendour”, page 82 The Swiss and Italian photographer and set designer was right in her element working on this edition’s jewellery feature. “I am fascinated by Surrealism; for this shoot I was inspired by Magritte’s artwork in particular, playing with the scale of the objects and the jewellery and the iconic clouds.” Based in London, Rendina’s work has appeared in Vogue Japan, Vanity Fair and The Sunday Times Style. Jeremy Wayne “Nairobi Now”, page 23 “I knew I’d be in for some surprises in Nairobi, but the biggest one was the Nairobians themselves – urbane, sophisticated and staggeringly well informed on everything from ecology and wildlife conservation to Brexit,” says the hotel consultant, travel writer and longtime Tatler restaurant editor and critic. Wayne, who visited the Kenyan capital earlier this year, splits his time between London and New York and contributes to publications such as Food & Wine and Traveller’s World, among many others. Lauren Ho “More in Store,” page 51 “Unique retail experiences have been gaining momentum for a while now, but it’s always interesting when a trend starts to impact globally, from cities like Marrakech to Sydney,” says the London-based journalist, who wrote about some of the world’s hottest boutiques in this issue’s Style story. Ho is travel editor of Wallpaper* and also contributes to The Telegraph, Condé Nast Traveller and House & Garden. Nikola Borissov “An Affair to Remember”, page 72 Working on this issue’s fashion story – shot on the shores of Lake Como – was a dream come true for the prolific fashion and travel photographer, who also collaborates with the likes of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Marie Claire. “The shoot was terrific – and so much fun,” he gushes. “I loved the location: it was perfect for the cinematographic story we had in mind. The incredibly beautiful backdrop was practically a character in the story ... And the level of acting and immersion that our model delivered was above and beyond.” Kevin Conley “After the Storm”, page 90 “When I was younger, I wanted to move to the Caribbean to live on the beach and learn to windsurf. Now when I visit, I want to write a book.” For Conley, who writes frequently about art and politics, events on Anguilla and Dominica – both the tragedies and the triumphs – occur in close-up, on a human scale that the rest of the world has abandoned. “In a funny way, it reminds me of New York in the 1960s, when all the Pop artists knew each other, went to the same parties, and loved to tell you everything about everybody else – paradise for a writer.”
