DEPARTURES TRAVEL ON

DEPARTURES TRAVEL ON THE RADAR 30 TRES CHIC A Boudoir bedroom at Soho House Paris WHEN BOUTIQUE HOTEL Le Pigalle opened in its namesake neighbourhood in 2016, there was still some uncertainty about how the city’s historic red-light district would cope with an influx of the international jet-set. Very well, as it turned out. The Grand Pigalle, another hotel, had opened a few years earlier, and now Soho House Paris (sohohouse. com) has taken up residence in a 19th-century building that once housed the family of Jean Cocteau. Expect the group’s usual flourishes – standout event space, exceptional restaurant, round-the-clock buzz – and the quirky rooms are even more characterful than expected. In the 1st arrondissement the mood has always been more refined, and so it is at the two debuts within walking distance of the Louvre. The CAPITAL GAINS With a trio of hip new unveilings, Paris is roaring into 2022 in style. Cheval Blanc Paris (chevalblanc.com) overlooks the Seine from its majestic perch, and features Art Deco touches across all 72 rooms. Four restaurants and bars are joined by a Dior spa, which features a stunning pool and full gym and sauna. Just north of the new Bourse de Commerce, François Pinault’s new contemporary art space, Hôtel Madame Rêve (madamereve. com) promises sweet dreams in rooms that are panelled in wood and outfitted with contemporary classics. Similar in size to the Cheval Blanc, with 82 rooms, there are impressive culinary and wellness offerings – but the true star is Paris itself, which is rounding into form once again, and presents reasons enough to return several times to try each of the new hotels. – BN Seine views from a suite at Cheval Blanc Spotlight JAKARTA JEWEL CAPTURING THE EYE immediately as you enter the lobby of newly opened The Langham, Jakarta, is Haven, a magnificent chandelier depicting 3,000 fluttering crystal butterflies created by Lasvit, the renowned Czech glassware manufacturer. As it illuminates the lobby, it also sheds light on the level of craftsmanship that has gone into creating this longawaited 65-storey destination hotel, located within the Indonesian capital’s Sudirman Central Business District. Throughout the hotel, works by Indonesian artists, painters and photographers adorn the walls, while floor-to-ceiling windows offer spectacular views in each of the 223 rooms, which also feature state-of-the-art entertainment systems and sumptuous marble bathrooms. Perhaps the crowning glory is its eateries: Tom’s by Tom Aikens, influenced by British and other European cuisines; the forthcoming T’ang Court, an offshoot of The Langham, Hong Kong’s three Michelinstarred Cantonese restaurant; and Morimoto, haute Japanese fare from the eponymous New York City chef. Long anticipated, The Langham, Jakarta has proved well worth the wait. langhamhotels.com – JM ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD ... The reputation of Montenegro’s Boka Bay as the “New Riviera” received a boost with the opening of One&Only Portonovi (oneandonlyresorts.com), a 113-key retreat that combines a sense of the wild nature of its surroundings with luxe interiors and marks the first venture into Europe by the South African company. Farther east, the 100-room Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Istanbul (pictured; mandarinoriental.com) is a temple to the good life on the shores of the fabled river, and also introduces Novikov’s brand of exceptional pan-Asian cuisine to the Turkish city. Finally, reopening in mid-December, Silky Oaks Lodge (silkyoakslodge.com.au) in northern Queensland, Australia, offers an authentic jungle experience, adding six treehouse-style suites and the Daintree Pavilion – a two-bedroom villa, with an infinity pool and plunge spa – right on the edge of some of the most untamed landscape on Earth. – JM CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT: © THE LANGHAM JAKARTA, © MANDARIN ORIENTAL, © ALEXANDRE TABASTE, MARK SEELEN PLEASE CHECK THE LATEST GOVERNMENT ADVICE BEFORE BOOKING TRAVEL OR DEPARTING ON ANY TRIP
