A handful of companies conceived and founded in China are drawing upon the country’s rich heritage to create an array of items that appeal to cosmopolitan consumers both at home and abroad. PYE The brains behind China’s most wanted men’s shirting label is Dee Poon, a stylish 30 year old who also happens to be the daughter of Harvey Nichols owner and fashion tycoon Dickson Poon. The Harvard graduate started her fashion career in 2008 when she joined her mother’s manufacturing business, during which time she stumbled upon Pye, a defunct fashion label, which she eventually relaunched as a shirting specialist in 2012. Pye is one of a few fashion labels that boasts a completely integrated operation with a team that stretches from cotton growers to engineers. It uses some of the best cotton in the world (much of it is sourced from the Xinjiang region of China), along with cutting-edge technologies and specially developed yarns to produce not only seasonal ready-to-wear collections, but also a customisation service available at its five stores in Hong Kong and China. The latest news is a collaboration with Cathay Pacific on its first-class sleeper suits. pye.com.hk CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: © MARY CHING, © PYE, © QEELIN 46 departures-international.com

The long ripening period – a result of cooler temperatures – allows flavour development whilst retaining fresh acidity, a balance which New Zealand wines are famous for. A lot of the country’s plentiful vineyards are located in spectacular locations, be it close to a stunning shoreline or perched high amidst alpine peaks. Most wineries are open for tasting, and many have fine restaurants onsite. There are plenty of bicycles and chauffeur-driven wine tours too – a great way to take in the full spectrum of local flavours. Kiwis’ internationally acclaimed varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and the Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blends), so get ready to sample! Whale Watch Sunny Kaikoura, New Zealand is world famous for its superb warm weather, stunning scenery and exciting wildlife attractions and activities. One of the most popular wildlife experiences is the award-winning Whale Watch tours. The Giant Sperm Whales occupy the waters off the shore of Kaikoura throughout the entire year, making sightings frequent. Watch in awe as these giant creatures breach the water, raising their flukes high in the air. It is one of the most incredible experiences to witness up close and The Giant Sperm Whales are truly the main acts. The fun doesn’t stop there, depending on the season you may witness other species of whales during their migration. This can include; Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Southern Right Whales and amazing Orcas - which are actually of the dolphin family. Star Gazing Aoraki Mackenzie is a gold-rated dark sky reserve, in recognition of the quality of the almost light-pollution-free skies of the Mackenzie Basin, in the South Island of New Zealand, and includes Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, and the villages of Lake Tekapo, Twizel and Mt Cook. Extensive testing has shown the Mackenzie Basin has the clearest, darkest and most spectacular night sky in New Zealand. A high number of clear nights throughout the year, along with the stability and transparency of the local atmosphere and its unique dark skies, contribute to the Mackenzie’s international recognition as one of the best sites for viewing and researching the southern sky. The Magellanic Clouds - satellite galaxies to the Milky Way that are only visible in the southern hemisphere - can be seen continuously throughout the year.
