Style Etc. 25 Little Shops of Wonder 2 Maxfield LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 4 USA 1 If NEW YORK, NEW YORK THE RAW AND REFINED cast-iron loft space of If completely envelops you in the world of 1980s SoHo, a contrast to the area’s current Mall of America atmosphere. Once inside, be prepared to be hurled into a comprehensive examination of all-caps FASHION. For the past 37 years, owners Soha Farah, Johnny Farah and Jeanette Bird have scoured the world for hard-to-find, hard-to-describe items from The Soloist, By Walid, Haider Ackermann and Junya Watanabe. The pioneering siblings credit themselves as the first in New York to sell Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester. One doesn’t need a master’s in design to shop at If, but there are lessons to be learnt. IFSOHONEWYORK.COM Maison Margiela dress LONG BEFORE Los Angeles was known as a serious fashion destination, Maxfield established itself as the city’s go-to resource. Originally opened as Maxfield Bleu on Santa Monica Boulevard in 1969, the groundbreaking boutique moved to its current Melrose Avenue location in 1985. Owner Tommy Perse (father of clothing designer James Perse) drew attention for his avant-garde pairings of edgy emerging brands like Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons with vintage furnishings and medical vitrines filled with rare Cartier jewellery and Hermès objets. Today, Maxfield has expanded to include a second location at the Malibu Lumber Yard, plus a furniture gallery featuring Jean Prouvé and Le Corbusier. The store even employs a fulltime driver who delivers new arrivals to famous and civilian customers alike. MAXFIELDLA.COM 3 C. Madeleine’s MIAMI, FLORIDA MADELEINE KIRSH’S 930sq m vintage clothing store is a destination for shoppers in search of rare and eclectic finds – and where VIPs such as Bruce Weber and Rihanna mine the past for inspiration. Kirsh opened the North Miami Beach emporium 15 years ago. Hidden behind an unassuming storefront, C. Madeleine’s is a veritable (and shoppable) Costume Institute, organised by era from Victorian to contemporary, with clothes, accessories and jewellery from each. The big names are there (Dior, Chanel, Valentino), and Kirsh stocks pieces from collectable favourites like Giorgio di Sant’Angelo and Hanae Mori. Be sure to ask about the “haute couture room”, which features museum-worthy works from the likes of Cristóbal Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. And should you find, say, a Space Age Courrèges cocktail dress that needs a few extra inches, not to worry: Kirsh employs a tailor onsite. CMADELEINES.COM Susan SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SUSAN FOSLIEN’S modern Presidio Heights store is something slower in today’s “fast fashion” world. Starkly black and white, Foslien’s store first opened 33 years ago in Burlingame, California, and relocated to the city in 1989 with a similar aesthetic. With this amount of time atop speciality retail, and brutal candour, Foslien is both an insider secret and an acquired taste in San Francisco. But you’ve got to make the trek to see her in person: she offers nothing online. Once there, put away your electronics (there’s a strict no-mobile-phone policy) and get ready for honesty. Foslien maintains a hand in dressing customers herself, especially in one-of-a-kind, off-the-runway pieces from the likes of Comme des Garçons. (Hers was the first speciality store to bring CDG and Junya Watanabe to the US.) Try on anything and everything. But fear not when the last of the ornate Shiro Sakai (a disciple of Watanabe) handmade blazers is gone. Foslien is known to always have a trick – or a Greg Lauren blouse – up her sleeve. 3685 SACRAMENTO STREET; +1 415 922 3685 CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: © IF, LISA CORSON, PATRICIA CHANG, © C.
