HOME+DESIGN THE GLOBAL GUIDE TO MATERIAL COMFORTS Churba’s singular Silla Horqueta makes use of a continuous pattern of curved and knotted iron rods for this elegant – yet simple – chair PROFILE DESIGN AND CONQUER Combining impeccable pedigree with worldbeating talent, Argentinian designer Federico Churba might well be the next big thing By Mariana Rapoport In that innocent manner children have, tenyear-old Federico Churba flirted with the idea of being a furniture designer. On trips to his father León’s architectural studio he’d grab some tracing paper and pens and spend hours sketching steel and glass coffee tables. Then, it was just fun. Today, some 26 years later, he’s become one of Argentina’s rising stars, with a strong following both at home and abroad. Churba was born amid a dynasty that lives and breathes design. Alberto, his great uncle, was best known for textiles and furnishings – his armchairs are part of the collections at MoMA and the Victoria and Albert. © FEDERICO CHURBA departures-international.com 41
