CHECKING I N CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH The new world UNLOCKING THE KEYS A drive through Florida's iconic islands Ever since Christopher Columbus’s return from the New World, the Americas have been a source of international fascination and inspiration, a land of both ancient wonders and new beginnings. Today, the region commands attention across the board: from its world-beating aspirations in the fields of design and architecture to its unique take on food and drink, as well as fashion and craft, not to mention the vast natural expanses that remain untouched by human hand. In this issue of Departures, we dedicate a few pages to highlight these riches, to uncover hidden treasures and to revisit some familiar places that have taken on a new sheen. Nowhere has changed more in the last decade than Colombia, which, as Maureen Orth reports, is undergoing an inspiring transition from dangerous backwater to glamorous port of call. Elsewhere in the region, we return to the easy-going Florida Keys – a truly intoxicating tableau of Americana as Farhad Heydari, our international managing editor, reports – and our resident Buenos Aires correspondent Matt Chesterton samples the new food movement in the Argentine capital. There are, of course, many more stories throughout this edition of Departures, including pieces on Patagonia and Tulum, as well as profiles of Mexico City’s burgeoning fashion scene. But as with a region, continent and hemisphere so rich and varied, it’s hard to do more than scratch the surface with one issue, which is why we will continue to bring you stories from across the Americas in the future, alongside those from the rest of this immense, multifarious world of ours.
