HOME + DESIGN Steel

HOME + DESIGN Steel Appeal Florence-based Officine Gullo, which specialises in top-quality, custom-built kitchens, showed its latest designs at Palazzo Giureconsulti, close to its Milan showroom, during the Salone del Mobile. The chic Pacific Light Blue kitchen enhances the company’s recent developments for spaces with outdoor access. This beguiling design is made from oven-enamelled steel with a burnished brass trim. A central cooking island is equipped with a double barbecue, maxi high-efficiency burner and double-fry top (smooth or grooved) fitted with a steel lid. The preparation area has a single sink and a professional icemaker. Alongside is a multifunctional oven, double pizza oven, spit and food warmer. Die-cast aluminium stools with handsewn leather upholstery complete the charm offensive of this versatile and visually exciting design. officinegullo.com SPOTLIGHT Home Front Each year, the industry’s best and brightest make their way to Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile to unveil the year’s hottest furniture launches. NICOLE SWENGLEY reports on the 2017 fair’s top interiors trends Regal Retro Colombostile has long been known for handcrafted reinterpretations of classic designs, a theme heavily endorsed at this year’s event. Debuts this season include the Alonissos sofa draped in special-edition Rubelli fabrics, Elena Viganò’s limited-edition Fred table (pictured right) with its alluring blue marble top and polished chrome pedestal and the Divina chest of drawers (pictured above), whose hand-carved, cobalt-blue lacquer finish is dotted with silver leaf to create a starry-skies effect. Carlo Rampazzi’s leather-upholstered Swarovski Special Edition armchair is decorated with sparkling Swarovksi elements, while Maurizio Chiari’s “Il 600” baroque, 12-drawer desk is inlaid with gold, mother-of-pearl and precious timbers. And the throne-like Zar chair – inspired by an 18th-century original in the Kremlin – is finished in 2kt gold leaf and silk-velvet upholstery. Modern Instinct Third-generation, family-run Flexform is known for the timeless elegance of its understated furniture designs, which this year were once again in evidence. Championing these qualities are the super-comfortable Adda and Este sofas (pictured above) by architect-designer Antonio Citterio and the well-proportioned upholstered Tosca armchair, whose exposed solid-wood frame and woven cane back give it a neocolonial character. Functionality is similarly matched by aesthetics in the Cabarè series of small, practical tables – designed by Flexform’s in-house studio – which display a pleasing attention to detail. Their slender, wooden structures are crowned by a metal top shaped like a tray which, on the smaller table, can be removed altogether from the legs holding it in place and used as a practical serving platter. flexform.it Space Age Smart space-planning has always given Italian brand Poliform an edge over rivals. And its new launches proved no exception. Set Up, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, is a chest of drawers inspired by fashion-store display units. Sounds dull? Far from it. The handsome, matte-lacquered structure has a choice of top surfaces – either two-tone glass or bronzed mirror glass or a techno-leather finish. Open shelves, glass-fronted trays and inner dividers offer carefully organised spaces for personal kit. Dordoni has also created a walk-in bedroom closet and living-room wall system. Jean-Marie Massaud’s Pandora Due storage units (pictured below) come in vertical or horizontal geometric shapes, as do Marcel Wanders’s Theca cabinets (pictured left), which have clever internal systems to accommodate everything from removable trays for glasses and bottles to electrically wired compartments for DVD players. poliform.it FROM TOP: © FLEXFORM, © POLIFORM (2) DEPARTURES-INTERNATIONAL.COM 43
