DEPARTURES 100 3 Page On the eve of its 40th birthday year, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s artistic director Richard Tognetti reflects on its achievements In Australia’s cultural landscape, how significant is the ACO’s 40th birthday? Rock music is only 50 years old, and Australia’s greatest composer, Peter Sculthorpe, was born in 1929. I remember first hearing his music when I was 11, and it was actually the first time the ACO had played him. It was at the Wollongong Town Hall in 1976, and the orchestra was one year old, so I think that contextualises it. It’s 40 years in the long history of classical music, but in the very short history of rock music and in the very short history of Australia’s culture, I’m going to say, it’s very f#@$in’ important. [laughs] How does the vision you had 25 years ago when you started with the orchestra marry with where it is today? I never envisaged that we’d have such a good profile internationally because we are at the end of the world. [But] our reputation is OK. It’s more than OK: it exceeds what I would ever have expected. I have to say Neil Armfield’s Reflections on Gallipoli. [During the year] there’ll be an overwhelming mawkishness and sentimental outpouring and then, of course, there’ll be cynicism, but I can’t wait to see what he does with it. The Essential Cy Twombly Edited by the artist's longtime collaborator, it offers an unparalleled overview of his work. artbook.com 5 SPACE SAVER Half chair, half coat hanger – the birchwood Hanger Chair by Canadian designer Philippe Malouin can be folded flat and hung in the closet. umbrashift.com Louis Vuitton Fashion Photography More than 200 images demonstrate how the brand came to be the world’s most sought-after. rizzoliusa.com Anthony Caro Illustrations and essays chronicle the superlative career of the British sculptor. phaidon.com FROM TOP: GARY HEERY, © PHILIPPE MALOUIN (3); BOOKS: COURTESY OF THE PUBLISHERS 16 DEPARTURES-INTERNATIONAL.COM
