DEPARTURES 100 BEFORE THE FLOOD Due to be submerged in 2015, the ancient city of Hasankeyf in Anatolia has one last gasp The mighty Tigris wends its way through the soon-to-be-submerged archaeological gem of Hasankeyf Southeastern Turkey is the location of the most famous city you have never heard of. And it is about to disappear. Hasankeyf – meaning fortress of rock – in Anatolia has been occupied by nine civilisations from the Persians to the Ottoman Turks, and was a key staging post on the Spice Route. Its venerable mosques, bustling bazaar and shady gardens have survived little altered in centuries. Now, however, they are threatened by the rising waters of the Tigris as the newly completed Ilisu hydroelectric dam fills up. Eventually only the top of the great Rızk Camii minaret and Roman hilltop fortress will survive intact. Some important buildings, such as the romantic Zeynel Bey Mausoleum, are to be moved to high ground, but the beating heart of an ancient city will finally be stilled. Then Hasankeyf will be truly famous – for all the wrong reasons.
