PROMOTION 3 4 Not for nothing is the subtitle of Cindy Chao’s brand “The Art Jewel”. The Taiwan-born granddaughter of a famous temple architect and daughter of a sculptor creates wearable masterpieces. Most of them one-of-a-kind and highly collectable, they set out to be as much art as they are jewellery, every piece paying homage to the disciplines of her forebears. Each one comes with a distinctly architectural structure, meticulously worked in precious metals from gold to titanium and sculpted in a bold and naturalistic 3-D effect. To this Chao adds her unique design talent and faultless choice of rare and important gemstones, often placed in a sparkling, handset matrix of smaller stones – frequently diamonds – that add a magical brilliance. Chao started her brand in 2004 and was soon garnering accolades, including her 2009 Royal Butterfly being inducted into the Smithsonian Institution’s gem collection, achieving a record-breaking auction sum for contemporary Asian jewellery in 2013, and being granted the Outstanding Object Award at last year’s London Masterpiece exhibition for her Peony Brooch. She is increasingly invited to shows on the boundaries of high jewellery and fine art, such as the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris and London Masterpiece. This year she participated – for the first time – in The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht, the only new name among its very exclusive Haute Joaillerie section. “It has been our dream to be at TEFAF, and as our brand has grown quickly in the past three years, we felt it was the right time to apply”, says Chao. “It can take decades to get in so we are very honoured to have been chosen,” she adds. She has also returned to Masterpiece London, at both shows revealing an even more extraordinary and accomplished selection of new pieces, each the latest instalment in one of her favourite series of unique Black Label Masterpieces. Always striving for the ultimate in lightness, the newest in her series of feather pins are the two Royal Feather brooches, made 3 2019 BLACK LABEL MASTERPIECE VII EMERALD ARCHITECTURAL NECKLACE in white gold set with a pair of emerald-cut Colombian emeralds as well as 10,000 pieces of emerald beads 4 2019 BLACK LABEL MASTERPIECE VI IRIS SCULPTURAL BANGLE in white and yellow gold set with a pear-shaped fancy yellow diamond as well as 4,428 diamonds and pink and orange sapphires
