36 DEPARTURES TRAVEL CHECKING IN Schussing About New suites, chalets and even domes breathe fresh air into the Alps this winter. by Felice Hardy Private Escapes Imposing Le Grenier (consensiochalets.co.uk) in Méribel is the latest offering from on-trend chalet operator Consensio. The ski-in ski-out property has 550 square metres of space arranged over five floors, and the living area has triple-height windows and glass doors opening onto a large terrace with outdoor seating. The spa has a gym, sauna, massage room and a huge slate sunken whirlpool. Unusually, aside from its four double bedrooms, the chalet has not one but two master suites, making it ideal for two families to share. In the next valley, Saint-Martinde-Belleville is the quieter resort, where Chez Bugi (whitemountain-chalets.com) is ski-in ski-out and features muted, elegant decor, six bedrooms, with bespoke furniture and sumptuous fabrics. In the same village and standing side-by-side are the twins Pure White & Pure Black Crystal (chalets-stmartin-belleville. com), with five bedrooms each, featuring woody interiors, black slate, central fireplaces, vast windows, swimming pools and Nordic baths. Farther along the Tarentaise Valley lies Les Arcs. Here Chalet des Cascades ( flexiski.com) is on the piste 100 metres The sprawling lounge at Chalet Purmontes Le Grenier’s cosy entrance lobby from the highest satellite of Arc 2000. It sleeps 14, has a counter-current swimming pool and uninterrupted views of the mountains. Flexibility is the key, so you can book by the week or for short breaks. Italy’s South Tyrol has long been a leading light in ecofriendly properties, and Chalet Purmontes ( winklerhotels.com) in St Lorenzen takes the concept to a new height with its lovely natural materials and sustainable construction. The intimate hideaway contains five suites, each with a private pool, and sister property, Hotel Lanerhof, is 250 metres away. Also convenient for skiing Kronplatz, with its state-of-the-art gondolas, is another chalet collection based around a hotel: Chalet Salena ( chalet-salena.com) features six apartments and one vast penthouse, and it is connected to Hotel Quelle Nature Spa Resort, where you can dine or visit the spa, with its unusual offerings including an outdoor waterwheel sauna and an infinity sauna. From here there’s also cross-country skiing at St Magdalena in the Gsies valley. The third home in South Tyrol is Bergvillen ( bergvillen. com), set in utter seclusion An ultra-private, ultra-modern Bergvillen chalet in the Hafling woods. Four modern chalets, each sleeping two to eight people, offer gorgeous interiors and private pools, and you have access to neighbouring Chalet Mirabell and its 6,000sq m spa. FRANCE’S OLDEST cable-car station has become the country’s highest hotel: Le Refuge de Solaise (lerefugevaldisere.com), above Val d’Isère, is a boutique getaway with a twist: in winter it’s only accessible by gondola or on skis. Its first apartment opens in December. Alpe d’Huez aims to be up there with Val by investing €350 million in its infrastructure; its first luxe spot, Hôtel Daria-I Nor (hotel-dariainor.com), has two pools, an ice fountain and two restaurants. In Chamonix, the bar-to-hotel trend gathers momentum, with ski-in ski-out Folie Douce Hotel (lafoliedoucehotels. com) featuring yoga as an antidote. Hot The converted piste-basher Over the Moon on its heels is Verbier’s Experimental Chalet (experimentalchalet.com), sister to Ibiza’s Experimental Beach, with 39 rooms, restaurant, spa and the famed Farm Club. To the east, in Switzerland, The Hard Rock Hotel (hardrockhoteldavos.com) is housed in a former sanatorium in Davos. Visit the Rock Spa and try a Rock Om yoga session. There is no partying at the health-conscious CampZero (campzero.com) in Champoluc, ecofriendly with Tesla charging stations, indoor and outdoor climbing walls and a spa featuring the healing properties of gems. Small and chic is the Alpinecool 22Summits (22summits.ch) in PURE PLAY Eccentric Accommodations The rustic-chic apartment at Le Refuge de Solaise Zermatt, with the same number of rooms as its name and a two-storey spa. Whisking you back in time is Bergdorf Prechtlgut (prechtlgut.at) in Wagrain, with eight chalets decked out in loden, linen, recycled wood and natural clay plaster; a rustic barn houses a restaurant and bar. Also in Austria is Ellmau’s Tirol Lodge (tirollodge.tirol) featuring cuttingedge design with oodles of wood and muted colours. A guestroom at Verbier’s Experimental Chalet LA PLAGNE HAS transformed one of its piste-bashers into a luxe suite kitted out with queen-sized bed, home cinema and bathroom – at 2,400 metres above sea level. You’re picked up from Plagne Bellecôte at 9pm and taken to the Over the Moon ( skipasslaplagne.com) “room” in its starry setting. Enjoy nature, too, by staying in the forest near Saint-Jean-d’Aulps in the Portes du Soleil: Les Bulles d’Aulps (hebergementinsolitehautesavoie.com) is opening its third bubble dome, with lovely views and wonderful peace and quiet. The bubbles have outside decks; inside are double or king-sized beds, lanterns and wood-burning stoves. Still on the forest theme, located between Megève and La Clusaz, is Cabane Entre Terre et Ciel (cabanes-entreterreetciel.fr). Choose between Cabane Nid, which is built like a nest with 30sq m roof terrace; Cabane Mont-Blanc, a treehouse with spa and sauna; and Cabane du Ruisseau, accessible via a rope bridge and featuring a big slide and play area.
