Our InspIratIOn Has always Been yOu. wynnlasvegas.com
Checking In CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH Having published the magazine you hold in your hands for the best part of a decade, my team and I have seen and experienced it all. And though nowadays very little surprises us – except, of course, uncovering excellence in everything from hospitality to gastronomy and craftsmanship in the most unlikely of places – the one thing that continues to amaze is the overwhelming response we receive each time we ask for your participation in our Readers’ Surveys. So, once again, we would like you to spare a few minutes to complete our 2015 Readers Survey, benefiting the international charity Doctors Without Borders. As in years past, your thoughts, feedback and recommendations for the print edition and for our companion website, departures-international.com, will help shape our editorial content, encouraging us to push the boundaries by seeking out stories that will both surprise and inform but also enable you to make the most of your leisure time. As such, we are pleased to present a flurry of features in this issue of Departures that we hope will do all that and more, starting with our wide-ranging A-Z travel compendium on page 17 with tried and tested reports, insightful interviews, timely round-ups and thorough guides focused on the elusive, the authentic and the quirky that can easily overfill an annual bucket list. A trio of beautifully-illustrated travel dispatches also await, including a piece on page 86 on the Peruvian capital of Lima, which, as Tom Parker Bowles discovered, is a culinary nirvana unlike any other. In the Canadian province of Ontario, meanwhile, Jim Clarke found oenophilic bliss among the icy vines (page 92), and farther north, we trek into the Arctic with Austin Merrill, starting on page 64. We have also dreamed up stunning portfolios of timeless chronographs, 1970s fashion and a multi-page spread on interiors, including profiles of a half-dozen British designers, and much more, all woven into the rich tapestry of a magazine that is richer because of your continued feedback, for which we are grateful in advance. ♦ Cover Story Whether it’s edgy fashion shoots, wanderlust-inspiring destinations or thought-provoking – and sometimes whimsical – illustrations, at Departures, we understand the importance of striking cover imagery. Here, some of our more recent examples. DEPARTURES-INTERNATIONAL.COM 11
