Departures UK 2014 Summer Edition

CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH

CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH Portland Resort at Paw’s Up The Ranch at Rock Creek Mustang Monument Chicago Barnard Lenox Hudson Bretton Woods Cambridge Newport New York Dunton Hot Springs Asheville Los Angeles Austin Anchorage Honolulu Miami the america issue As you have no doubt already noticed, this is a special edition of Departures – one dedicated to the brimful bounty of the US, a country that informs and influences international trends like no other in our globalised world. A country whose exports – be they in the brands we all covet or the ideals we all cherish – are consumed and revered by billions. And a country that needs little introduction and even less historical and geographical context. But what’s happening on the ground in America itself? The short answer is, a lot, and that’s the genesis of this summer edition of our magazine, which aims to explore some of those very happenings, starting with a handful of stories that debunk the idea that sophistication, be it in gastronomy, hostelry or retail, can only be found in those expected quarters we frequent. In New England, for instance, we provide an unmissable and enduring autumnal itinerary for the roving gourmand, while out west we profile the new (and new-look) resorts that aptly capture the rugged frontier ethos of that hitherto wild hinterland in style. Down in Asheville, North Carolina, we visit a burgeoning foodie destination tucked in the Appalachian Mountains that’s coming of age. And in Hudson, New York, where the transplanted New York City arts set has repaired to, we witness a town’s transformation as it happens. Change is afoot in oft-visited destinations, too, like Miami, which is undergoing a revolutionary property boom, commensurate with its arrival on the upper echelon of the art and design scene; in New York, where a glut of new hotels have debuted downtown; and even in Hawaii and Alaska, from where we have a pair of timely dispatches that complement articles about American fashion’s global resurgence, Detroit’s latest hotrods and an unlikely Chicago architour, courtesy of the homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s impossible, of course, to highlight all the regions, experiences or creatives that are worthy of our gaze – and your attention – in a single issue, which is why we hope you join us online at our home, departuresinternational.com, where the news, features and our expanded coverage of this land of plenty will continue. As the familiar tagline goes, we look forward to welcoming you onboard. ANDREAS ACHMANN; ARTWORK BY ANJA EICHINGER 12 departures-international.com
