ADVERTORIAL The production location Germany for the electronics industry can only assert itself through quality and know-how. Preservation of the quality seal „Made in Germany“ through optimized processes in smart factories We all know keywords such as: Industry 4.0, Smart Factory, Zero Defect Line. But very few companies have concrete approaches for implementation. This is essential for the preservation of the production location Germany. What prevents companies from becoming a smart factory? Most of the time it is the fact that they do not know how to start, what it costs and, most importantly, if it really benefits them. Nobody has time to give away, and in production everyday life, as the name implies, must be produced. However, if we focus only on the quantity of produced PCB, there is a big risk of missing the train to the „zero-defect line“. The biggest challenge in implementing process optimization tools is managing the huge amount of data that is generated by all assets. The quality advantage of german products through the concept of a zero-defect line can only be achieved if the inspection systems provide reliable information. The key is not to detect errors, but to prevent them in advance. In addition to being able to find all the faults without escapes, inspection systems must be very accurate in order to detect trends and trigger warnings before defects actually occur. In such a case, a high repeatability is not enough. The equipment must measure very accurately to feedback information to other machines (e.g., SPI to AOI or SPI to printer). Especially with highly variable processes, accuracy is the key factor to measure accurately the paste volume for small pads, as well as the offset for small components. When we see inspection equipment as ‚visible‘ measurement tools in SMT lines, the key component of the zero-defect line is the software that collects all the information, processes all the data, and provides useful feedback to the operators. With 100% control of all process steps and the need for data traceability, the amount of data generated by inspection systems is in creasing. The challenge of the zero-defect line lies in the software ability to transform data into relevant information. Delivering better quality than countries like China, Hungary or Poland is becoming more and more difficult as the quality in these countries has increased enormously in the last years. Times when only the simplest products were made or copied in China are long gone. Therefore, it is important to continue the way to the zero defect line in the future. In addition to very precise machines, software plays an important role here. Obtaining important information about process control from many data and statistics is a first step towards Industry 4.0. Sigma Link: a powerful software suite that converts inspection data in important process information The next step is the standardization of interfaces across manufacturers and systems. Approaches such as the Hermes standard (in which Vi TECHNOLOGY also participates) are the first promising approaches to improve communication from machine to machine. For example, it is sufficient for traceability of PCB to read the data matrix code only at the beginning of the line. Then to forward it from machine to machine. Downtimes or errors due to a code that is difficult or impossible to read would thus be avoided. To protect Germany as a production location, we still have to go a step further. Uniform software for all systems and standards of formats to program the machines, evaluate the errors and analyse the data. The time required is thus minimized. The data is processed once, the printer, SPI, pick&place and AOI get all this data and can thus be programmed more easily. Waiting too long will cost the existence of many companies. Selling only by giving high discounts already doesn´t work. But companies from Eastern Europe or Asia are also gaining in quality. The ability to show to their end customer already today that mistakes can not only be found but traced back to the source and stopped immediately is a way to keep up „made in Germany“.
