Help to create a future

Help to create a future of excellence in energy at the Wits Business School’s African Energy Leadership Centre “Our Centre provides students with an opportunity to grow competencies across among others, the energy value chains, an understanding of energy geopolitics, the intersection of energy with society, the environment and business. This equips our students with the skills to find solutions to energy challenges, particularly here in Africa” Professor Lwazi Ngubevana Director: African Energy Leadership Centre (AELC), Wits Business School In addition to changing the leadership landscape within the energy sector, locally and globally, the AELC aims to drive gender transformation. The Centre has identified the lack of female representation in the energy sector, and wishes to encourage more women to pursue a career in the field. It is no secret that South Africa is experiencing an unprecedented energy crisis, and the demand for security of energy supply in Africa continues to grow exponentially. The African Energy Leadership Centre (AELC) at Wits Business School aims to sculpt leaders in the energy sector, to help them think and act strategically, and equip them with the skills needed to navigate through the challenges of an evolving African energy landscape. Founded in 2017, the Centre, through research and teaching, aims to address the challenges in the energy sector, and develop the next generation of skilled leaders. Since its inception, the Centre has welcomed students and researchers, locally and internationally, including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa. The AELC offers three academic programmes, namely, a Master of Management in the field of Energy Leadership, a Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Leadership and a PhD in Energy Leadership. These programmes provide leaders with a solid foundation in all aspects of energy leadership and have a strong focus on critical thinking, analysis and decision-making. Programme delivery at the AELC has three main focal points: research and thought leadership, postgraduate programmes and executive education, plus networking and professional development. The overarching goal is to assist those aspiring to carve a future for themselves in the energy sector to become confident, decisive and effective leaders. The academic programmes offered by the AELC do not only broaden the skills of the students; they also equip them with the ability to make an impact not only within the energy sector but into related industries, such as banking, asset management, legal and government regulation and policy. The Centre boasts academic staff who are passionate about the energy space, and, armed with both theoretical and practical industry knowledge, ensure that each student gains a deep and thorough understanding of the energy field and its challenges and opportunities. “We aim to address the skills shortages within the energy leadership sector by producing world-class leaders who span various industries and professions,” says Professor Lwazi Ngubevana, Director of the AELC. Applications are open for the January 2024 intake. Visit www.wbs.ac.za or www.africanenergycentre.ac.za for more information.
