26 SPECIAL FEATURE

26 SPECIAL FEATURE ADVERTORIAL CITY BREAKS A Different Take on LA MORE MAGIC FOR LOS ANGELES, HARRY POTTER-STYLE You would have to be confident to call yourself, “The Entertainment Capital of LA.” Or magical. And Universal Studios Hollywood is both. Universal Studios Hollywood includes a movie-based theme park and Studio Tour, the CityWalk (entertainment, shopping and dining complex), cinemas and the “5 Towers” state-of-the-art outdoor concert venue. In April they add a new major attraction, “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.” More than five years in the making, this wizard’s world will be faithful to the visual landscape of the fiction and films, including Hogsmeade and Hogwarts castle. The cutting edge in theme park ride technology, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” is a hyper-realistic, 3D-HD thrill ride. Guests sport Quidditchinspired 3D goggles, and spiral and pivot 360-degrees along an elevated track. That’s magic for any city break. Hall 2.1 / Stand 480 LOS ANGELES, HOME OF UNEXPECTED MASTERPIECES Getty Center NEW LOOK FOR TERMINAL 2 AT LAX Now undergoing an .5 billion modernization program, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the fifth busiest airport in the world (second in USA). LAX saw 74.9 million passengers in 2015 and, of those, 5.2 million passengers (80% international visitors) arrived in Terminal 2. 20 months and 2 million later, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has unveiled the renewed international Terminal 2, calling it, “an important milestone in the LAX modernization.” HARRY POTTER characters, names and related indicia are © & ô Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Harry Potter Publishing Rights © JKR. (s15) ©2015 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved. The entire process was done while keeping the 24-hour terminal open while creating fresh facilities with more seating, new services, and expanded dining and shopping experiences. The terminal design was inspired by “L.A. in Motion,” which captures the energy and on-the-go attitude of Los Angeles. Three distinct shopping and dining districts are highlighted by a grand staircase that offers customers a luxurious but efficient travel experience. The stairs lead directly up to airline lounges. Hollywood masterpieces might be synonymous with LA for many, but any good film director could tell you there is more to know about this city’s storyline You hear the words Los Angeles and you automatically think about Hollywood, the Oscars, Grauman’s (now TCL) Chinese Theater and maybe Sunset Boulevard (because of the movie with the same name). Try this for a twist in plot: Los Angeles has more museums than any other city in the USA. World-class cultural attractions are located throughout Los Angeles. Including a thriving gallery scene, LA is home to iconic works, masterpieces from Van Gogh, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin, Gainsborough and others. Sure, there’s Hollywood (and Disneyland) but this city is a mustvisit destination for art and history enthusiasts looking for a city break. The Getty Center is home to “Irises,” one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous works. At last look, it ranked 10th on the list of most expensive paintings ever sold. And one of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s most beloved paintings, “La Promenade,” is exhibited in the same room. The Norton Simon Museum holds the famous portrait, “Woman with a Book” by Pablo Picasso. Also at this museum is “The Thinker (Le Penseur),” an iconic bronze sculpture on a marble pedestal created by French sculptor Auguste Rodin. At the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), visitors can see Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s “Flower Day (Día de Flores).” Also there is Belgian artist René Magritte’s, “The Treachery of Images (Ceci n’est pas une pipe),” a masterpiece of surrealism and an icon of modern art. Hall 2.1 / Stand 480 International Visitors Up 3.3% for Los Angeles, 6.7 Million for 2015 Los Angeles welcomed 45.5 million visitors in 2015, breaking visitation records for the fifth consecutive year. Total domestic visitation reached 38.8 million, a 2.8% increase over 2014, while the 6.7 million international visitors were a 3.3% increase. China was the most dynamic market with a year-over-year growth of 13.6%, officially becoming L.A.’s number two international market, behind Mexico, with 779,000 visitors. South Korea also grew by double digits, an increase of 11% totaling more than 282,000 visitors. ITB BERLIN NEWS • Wednesday 9 th March 2016 www.itb-berlin-news.com

CITY BREAKS SPECIAL FEATURE 27 ADVERTORIAL Austin – Adding Shine to the Lone Star Liberal & laid back… “flip-flops” are the order of the day Julie Chase Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer – Austin Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, talks to us about “what’s new” in this fast growing southern US tourist destination. Non-stop air services into Austin are on the rise. Condor Airlines new seasonal direct service from Frankfurt starts in June 2016. The direct British Airways route from London is celebrating its second anniversary in March 2016, introducing the new 787 with its legendary first class section. We will be the first US destination to have that plane. How is the hotel offer evolving? We now have the largest JW Marriott in America, opening in Austin in 2015. A new Westin opened in 2015, and a new Fairmont opens in 2017. A year ago, there were 6,000 rooms in the downtown area and in the next couple of years, we will add around 2,000 extra rooms. Everyone in the industry probably knows Austin as the live music capital of the world – with festivals, and everything from Jazz through Blues and Country to Rock in downtown venues... But what else is new? There’s the racing – the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Formula One Grand Prix. In addition, in June we have the X Games – that used to be held in Los Angeles, also at the Circuit of the Americas. Austin is known as being “Silicon Hills” as the technology capital of the south. How is that impacting what you do? IBM has a huge presence here and one of the companies that have spun-off, WayBlazer, is working with us on a very exciting Beta project. They are providing us with a tool giving consumers and travel professionals the possibility to do cognitive searches on our website. In other words, you can ask a question, AS a question (the way you talk), and the search engine will find the answers. It’s quite amazing and we’re happy to be the first to leverage this technology that will doubtless go on to be broadly used in the industry in future. Julie Chase President and Chief Marketing Officer – Austin Convention and Visitors’ Bureau Driskill Undergoes 8m Restoration McKinney Falls State Park Austin’s landmark downtown hotel, the Driskill, bought in 2013 by the Hyatt group, has undergone a spectacular million “restoration” project – making it more than ever a “must see” attraction. Hotel management insists on the word “restoration” rather than “renovation”; those visiting will understand why. Built in 1886, the Driskill has a rich history that includes hosting The Driskill Hotel American presidents, Texas governors and Hollywood celebrities in its well-appointed guest rooms, and was designated a national historic landmark in 1969. Dining options include the 1886 Café and Bakery and the Driskill Grill, which has been serving diners since 1929. Its bar has been a favourite gathering place for visitors and locals alike. Hall 2.1 / Stand 480 McKinney Falls – A State Park INSIDE the city limits Listen to Onion Creek flowing over limestone ledges and splashing into pools. Follow trails winding through the Hill Country woods. Explore the remains of an early Texas homestead and a very old rock shelter. All of this lies within Austin’s city limits at McKinney Falls State Park. Here, visitors can camp, hike, mountain or road bike, geocache, go bouldering, and picnic. One can also fish and swim in Onion Creek. Visitors can stay at one of no less than 81 campsites (all with water and electric hook-ups), or rent a newly remodelled cabin. The 2.8-mile Onion Creek Hike and Bike Trail has a hard surface, good for strollers and road bikes. Then there’s the Rock Shelter Trail (only for hikers) to see where early visitors camped.
