T.W. Anyone can do yoga

T.W. Anyone can do yoga – also at our studio. I try to find the perfect class for every newbie. My youngest client is 12 years old, my oldest is 80. The postures are adapted accordingly. In any case it is important to start out slowly and try different things. The harmony between teacher and student is also very important, as is one’s energetic wellbeing. If you’ve never done yoga I’d recommend a beginners’ course. You need to be comfortable in the asanas, the body postures. And then the practice will develop step by step. Yoga practice should be sustainable and accompany you throughout your life. L.L. Vinyasa Flow, Prana Flow and Ashtanga. There are very different types of yoga. Which do you teach and what are the differences? T.W. I teach different yoga styles. Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic yoga style where movement and breathing combine to become one flowing experience. You flow through creative and varied yoga postures, called asanas. Here you experience physical exertion and lightness at the same time, a solid base and balance. There are many asanas. I also am a Budokon® yoga teacher. Budokon® are teachings by Carmon Shayne. They are a combination of martial arts and yoga. It’s about the warrior and the yogi and their relationship. According to his theory we carry both inside us. It’s a very dynamic and disciplined style. Aside from that I also teach Yin-Yoga. It’s a gentle way of getting into body postures which are then held passively for several minutes. The practise is very calm but also very effective. I also let my yogamedicine training influence all my classes. That way I use different techniques to reach therapeutic effects, e.g. myofascial release where you loosen blockages in the fasciae and treat other ailments. My team at OM & CO also teaches Ashtanga Inspired and Prana Flow. I’m a passionate yoga teacher and I see how the studio keeps growing. But still I’m a yoga teacher first and businesswoman second. Taking care of the business end is more difficult than teaching yoga (laughs). 76 L.L. One often gets the impression that yoga fans are mostly female. What makes yoga interesting for men?

T.W. I’d say that many have not yet realised that yoga can be quite the physical challenge. It’s more than just sitting around and saying “om”. And the offer for men is huge. I even teach an all-male group. Because men’s muscles have a different structure than women’s, men are often less flexible. Which is why I adapt the postures accordingly. L.L. Nowadays sports shops offer a wide variety of beautiful yoga gear. Is there a certain yoga dress code? T.W. Here at OM & CO we have no dress code. Yes, yoga has become very fashionable and there is a huge industry behind this. However, the right clothing can increase one’s wellbeing in one’s body. But if that’s something you do not care about you can wear whatever you like. That’s always up to you. L.L. Competitive athletes use yoga as a means of compensation and strengthening their deep muscles. What is the effect yoga has on their bodies? T.W. Through yoga they can get a really good feel for their own bodes – how they stand and how they breathe. These techniques can often be translated to their sport. I often adapt the exercises to the athlete in front of me. And with yoga medicine I treat problems that were caused by other types of sports during private sessions. That’s very effective. Sport & Freizeit “During a yoga class there is no right or wrong, I want to provide impulses that are thought-inspiring. It is important to make these experiences with yourself.” “I think that here many people do not yet understand what yoga means, they think you just sit around and chant ‘om’.” “Yoga out in the open is a very special kind of peace for me.” L.L. Summer is coming and Kitzbühel’s wonderful landscape beckons. Do you do yoga sessions out in the open, too? T.W. Yes, every Saturday morning we meet at Gieringer Weiher. That’s a small lake right behind Schwarzsee. The spot is really idyllic and at 8.30 in the morning there is no-one else there. We practise yoga on the grass, it’s a great experience in the nature. You notice different things. The birds sing. For me it’s a very special kind of calm. L.L. You don’t just offer different courses; you also organise events. What highlights can we look forward to in the future? T.W. We organise all kinds of yoga retreats and events every year. The gourmet yoga retreat in Kals on Grossglockner at Gradonna Mountain Resort takes place twice a year. 77
