THE LAST WORD MATT FITZPATRICK The US Open champion on life away from the golf course JULIAN RENTZSCH TRAVEL Sun worshipper or thrill-seeker? Defi nitely a sun worshipper! I’m not one for massively adventurous holidays, I don’t go skiing or anything like that. I’m more than happy to sit on the beach and relax with no golf clubs in sight. After the last event on the DP World Tour in Dubai, I like to head over to the Maldives to sit, relax, read books and generally do nothing. ACCOMMODATION Grandes dames, luxe design, or eminently private? It depends on the occasion and location, really. I love the Four Seasons collection, so if I ever get the opportunity to stay in its properties I usually take the chance. For major championships, I usually like to rent a nice modern house relatively close to the course. FOOD Big names or hidden gems? Again, I’m not the most adventurous – I like to stick to what I know! I usually try to fi nd really good Italians, steakhouses or Japanese. I’m a big sushi guy, so I like looking out for the best sushi when I’m on the road. ARTS Still life or live performance? I actually like both. In big cities, I like visiting the galleries and museums. I’m also a fan of music concerts. DAY TO DAY Good book or big screen? Again, I really like both. I’m big into my TV and so when I’m travelling I like to get stuck into a good Netfl ix series. I’m also a big Marvel guy, so any of those fi lms I could watch over and over again. TRANSPORT Fast lane or cruise control? Tough one. I’m currently driving a Tesla so I’m probably more comfortable putting it in cruise control and letting it take me where I need to go! FUTURE PLANS Media work, course design or other? I think course design is something that intrigues me, maybe for when I retire from the game. At the moment, I’m just focused on being the best golfer I can be and continuing the journey. I’ve had some amazing moments, especially this year winning the US Open. So I’m just concentrating now on trying to capitalise on all the good play and take it into the next season. 98 NetJets
