Set within Pharos, the newest gallery space at Tasmania’s Mona (mona.net.au), it features four recently acquired works by light artist James Turrell. Have your mind blown, then tuck in jamón ibérico and a black margarita garnished with a pig’s eyeball encased in ice. It was a long time coming, Sydney’s futuristic Barangaroo House but chef Matt Moran’s newest Sydney establishment Barangaroo House (barangaroohouse.com.au) has flung open the doors on its expansive threestorey eatery and bar. Downstairs is the casual House Bar; the middle layer is home to Bea restaurant, which is smart but far from formal; and up top is Smoke, the rooftop bar with waterside vistas. Morgan McGlone made his name in Melbourne at Nashville-style hot chicken spot, Belles, but now the chef is going large with Natural History (naturalhistorybarandgrill.com. au). Taking its design influences from museums the world over, the venue is a two-in-one offering. Overlooking the street is Natural History Café; out the back is 350-seat Natural History Bar & Grill, modelled on New York’s finest bistros doused with Southern American influences. Artist Vanja Zaric’s 15m-long fantasy diorama, complete with taxidermy, is sure to be the next Instagram sensation. Local products and aspiring food entrepreneurs are the focus at Perth’s Yagan Square Market Hall. An expected 26 vendors, offering all manner of cuisine from Chinese dumplings to handmade chocolates, will tempt visitors. Yagan Square (mra. wa.gov.au) itself is a huge redevelopment project offering a pedestrian connection between the central business district and the popular suburb of Northbridge. Its name honours the Noongar people’s greatest warrior-leader, while its offerings cover the full spectrum – restaurants as well as a huge bar, an amphitheatre, public art, playscapes and wildflower gardens. John Russell: Australia’s French Impressionist at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (artgallery.nsw.gov.au), opening 21 July, features around a hundred paintings, drawings and watercolours by an artist who was friends with Van Gogh and taught colour theory to Matisse. Celebrating the career of a master bark painter is John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new. Born in 1952, Mawurndjul is a Kuninjku elder, who lives and works in Central Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. This exhibition of his work from the past 35 years opens at Sydney’s MCA (mca.com.au) on 6 July. In Melbourne, things have gone down the rabbit hole with the world premiere of WONDERLAND. This interactive exhibition at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image; acmi.net.au) celebrates the screen history of Lewis Carroll’s Alice works, which have been turned into more than 40 movies and 30 television programmes.
