This year, the 29th Season, the NC Dance Festival opens in Asheville and then continues across the state with performances in Durham and Greensboro. Five choreographers from across NC will share their work, along with local Wilmington’s Alyona Amato presents “It’s All About Me,” an ensemble dance that combines video and movement to capture the sense of competition and self-centeredness that can characterize our modern culture. Asheville company Stewart/Owen Dance. Vania Claiborne (Greensboro) presents “(Bro)tha/Brother,” a duet for two men that celebrates and explores black male joy, friendship, and humanity. In Studio C Project’s (Durham) atmospheric “Two,” three dancers follow two sets of movement instructions that test the accuracy of memory in response to a shifting environment. MARO Movement (Southern Pines) explores the sometimes taboo topic of mortality and vulnerability with “Impact,” inspired by choreographer Matthew Rock’s late grandmother. The multigenerational dancers of Durham’s Big Red Dance Project, ranging in age from 38-78 and directed by Gerri Houlihan, reveal the melodic and rhythmic complexities of J.S. Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor in “Dances for the Time Being.” Wilmington’s Alyona Amato presents “It’s All About Me,” an ensemble dance that combines video and movement to capture the sense of competition and self-centeredness that can characterize our ‘Dance’ continued on page 23 16 |RAPIDRIVERMAGAZINE.COM | RAPID RIVER’S ARTS & CULTURE | VOL. 23, NO. 2 OCTOBER 2019
