A current parent perspective on the UK's top schools

INSIDE SCOOP Downe House Cold Ash, Thatcham, Berkshire, RG18 9JJ Admissions: 01635 204701 • Day/Full 11-18 SE The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Our daughter is really flourishing at Downe House. She was at a local primary school, so we were anxious about the transition but they have nurtured her from the moment she arrived this year. The boarding staff have been amazing and the communication with parents is excellent. Girls are encouraged to be open-minded, take risks and to have a go at everything! Downe House girls thrive in the classroom but also on the sports field, on stage and socially too. The attention to detail for every individual is remarkable and the pastoral care is unparalleled. It is such an inclusive school and we love the emphasis on mental fitness and wellbeing which leads girls to be the best that they can. As parents, we love: Mrs McKendrick, is the perfect Headmistress. The pastoral care and attention to detail shown by all staff towards our daughter, no girl could slip between the cracks. The range of co-curricular activities to keep the girls active, engaged and always trying something new. Our children love: Her amazing Housemistress and dorm. The chance to try all sorts of things, especially sport and drama. The school food is really good! HEADS UP “I believe that as a school, we have a a responsibility to provide our pupils with as many opportunities as possible; academic, co-curricular and pastoral and to allow every girl to grow, develop, discover and build on her individual strengths.” Emma McKendrick, Headmistress Open days: 15 June 2019, 7 September 2019, 23 November 2019, 18 January 2020, 21 March 2020, 25 April 2020. 30 Read the full review on ★ 2019

INSIDE SCOOP Downside School Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Radstock, Bath, BA3 4RJ Admissions: 01761 235103 • SW Day/Flexi/Full 11-18 The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We choose Downside as my family has had a long history of being educated there. However what particularly stood out for us and why we decided to send our children was due to the sense of belonging and community that pervades the school. Irrespective of the academic or sporting ability of any pupil, Downside always gives its pupils a high level of confidence and self-security that will last them for the rest of their life. Staff show genuine interest and an understanding for all the children in their care. Also important is that they have all had, or still have, children of their own at the school which gives it a wonderfully warm family feel. Old Gregorians are extremely likeable, well-rounded and reliable. As parents, we love: The Headmaster and senior management team. The setting of Downside Abbey is a magnificent landmark - the school was purpose built around it. The network, of OG’s and of current parents, all of whom work together with the school to make both the child and his/her family, be they parents or siblings, welcome and included. Our children love: The opportunities to express themselves either academically, artisticaly, or on the sports field. The food, as good as any, you will get anywhere. The quality of accommodation. HEADS UP “Downside’s vision is to be a bright light in the world of education, illuminating the lives of young people and inspiring service through experience of Benedictine culture. We develop our identity through experience of a community with Christ as its centre.” Andrew Hobbs, Headmaster Open days: 18th May 2019. 2019 ★ Read the full review on 31
