Research Close to the Heart Not only did Tracy Tyner know her research topic before even enrolling at Texas Woman’s—she lived it. In late 2017, she received a breast cancer diagnosis. By early 2018, Tyner underwent a double mastectomy with flat closure, addressing the cancer but removing the option of breast reconstruction. Programs • Business (MBA) Accounting & Finance, Health Care Administration, Management & Marketing • Health Care Administration • Nursing • Occupational Therapy • Physical Therapy While Tyner’s procedure went well and she is now cancer free, she found a flat closure community online of women with negative surgical outcomes. In 2019, she enrolled in the PhD in Nursing Science program inspired to help these women and advocate for breast cancer awareness. Today, Tyner has published numerous articles, blogs and abstracts on the topic. And she did it all while working full time as an acute care nurse practitioner in the surgical-trauma intensive care unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
