The Iron Gate area of the lower Danube is one of the world’s most scenic river gorges. Enormous white chalk cliffs flank the river, which forms part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania. Some 1,200 years ago, Emperor Charlemagne contemplated connecting the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers to facilitate river travel through Europe.
