In 1911, British explorer Robert Scott and Norwegian Roald Amundsen raced to be the first to reach the South Pole. Amundsen borrowed the schooner Fram from Fridtjof Nansen, another great Norwegian explorer and Nobel Peace Prize winner. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen reached the South Pole and raised the Norwegian flag there. 20
