EXPLORERS’ LOUNGE | DECKS 7–8 TIINA SUHONEN 1963 X FINLAND X EMBROIDERY The inspiration for Tiina Suhonen’s work is the Karelian embroidery tradition from Finland, particularly the kukkilintu bird. Resembling a hen, the kukkilintu has an important ritual and spiritual meaning in Karelian culture. The word “kukki” means the purest or the dearest, and the kukkilintu—being the symbol of light, warmth, harvest, love and the Holy Spirit—represents “the one bringing the good message.” Today, it is an important part of Finnish national identity. Suhonen has taken the kukkilintu figure on new adventures as a performer in water-related sports in contemporary life. Her embroideries are full of character and charm, keeping the Finnish tradition alive. THE ICE-HOCKEY BALLET | 2015 SKI JUMPING | 2015 10
