THE RESTAURANT ENTRANCE

THE RESTAURANT ENTRANCE | DECK 2 AMALDUS NIELSEN 1838–1932 X NORWAY X OIL ON CANVAS Amaldus Nielsen was the first Norwegian painter to consistently paint outdoors. As a painter, he was among the first to capture motifs on-site and make studies in the open. From 1854 to 1856, Nielsen studied at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen, followed by two years at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf between 1857 and 1858. In 1867, he enrolled as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and studied under painter Hans Gude (1825–1903) for one year. Nielsen displayed his work at the International Exhibition of 1862 and the Universal Exposition of 1889, and in Munich in 1913. He is perhaps best known for the collection of about 300 works that was donated to the municipality of Oslo by Nielsen’s heirs in 1933. This collection has been a permanent exhibit at the Stenersen Museum since 1994. In 1890, Nielsen was decorated as a knight, first class, of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. EVENING | 1886 36

THE RESTAURANT ENTRANCE | DECK 2 HULDA TEGNÉR GRØNNEBERG 1844–1924 X NORWAY X OIL ON CANVAS Hulda Tegnér Grønneberg was a Norwegian landscape painter who depicted a wide repertoire of themes, from mountains and fjords to villages and gardens of Norway and beyond. Her work has a detailed realism, suggesting she was more influenced by French outdoor painting than the late Romantic Munich School. She was an industrious exhibitor in the 1880s, and presented her work at the Nordic Exhibition of 1888 in Copenhagen and the Universal Exposition of 1889. During this time, she produced her best paintings—a few of which are considered among the most important landscapes of naturalism in Norway. Grønneberg continued to paint throughout her life, especially during journeys she undertook with her son Harald Grønneberg, who was also a painter. LANDSCAPE WITH WATER | YEAR UNKNOWN 37
