THE RESTAURANT | DECK 2 JANICKE SCHØNNING 1974 X NORWAY X INK AND FROST ON PAPER Since 2010, Norwegian artist Janicke Schønning has been working on a long-term landscape art project she calls Motherland. Based in Nordmarka, Oslo, Norway, she explores the intriguing nature of the forest and our connection to nature. She works outdoors in the woods during all the seasons, letting the different weather conditions, such as frost, rain, snow and the sun, affect the formation of her images. The picture on board was made during the Norwegian winter. It was painted with ink, and you can see how the frost crystallized the ink and left traces in the picture. Schønning’s preferred mediums are ink, gouache and paper, and her artwork integrates varying degrees of abstraction. 44
