Vinexpo Asia’s country of honour this year is the United States, which have decided on a collective approach for promoting the diversity of wines from the western United States in Asia. Events in connection with the United States as the country of honour will include masterclasses organised by the California Wine Institute (CWI) scheduled every morning and moderated by 2 top personalities in the industry: Elaine Chukan Brown, American wine writer and Evan Goldstein, Master Sommelier and journalist. These masterclasses will address themes such as Lodi Red, the Californian red wine, new trends and sustainability, and the Chardonnay grape variety in California. Through the Vinexpo Academy, Vinexpo Asia will provide a highlevel programme drawing on a range of formats and experts from across the globe to promote learning, inspiration, tastings and conversations. These will include a number of masterclasses, such as, for the first time in Asia in 2023, the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET)’s masterclass to support education for wine and spirits professionals; conferences, including the much-anticipated Alcoholic Beverage Consumption Trends in Korea, moderated by Junghoon Moon (Professor at the Seoul National University) and major tastings, such as The Major Tasting by the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB) featuring prominent properties from among the 130 classified chateaux for a presentation of the 2020 vintage with over 100 Bordeaux Grands Crus showcased. The show’s awards ceremonies will include The Drinks Business Asian Awards and the Swedish media Star Wine List of the Year, which awards the best wine lists by category with its panel made up of some of the world’s best sommeliers. Some of the top highlights of the show organised by Vinexposium will include the Vinexpo Challenge, in conjunction with the ASI (International Sommelier Association), hosted by Raimonds Tomsons, recently crowned 2023 Best Sommelier of the World. For an hour, participants will be invited to test their knowledge and get a preview of some exceptional wines. Another event that’s created a fair amount of buzz is the The Battle of the Sommeliers, held for the first time in Singapore with Mason Ng (ASI 2022 Best Sommelier for Asia & Oceania), Chuan Ann (Malaysian semifinalist at the Best Sommelier of the World competition) and Le Hoang Khanh Vi (Best Sommelier of Vietnam, also ranked as the Best Asian Sommelier in the 2023 Best Sommelier of the World competition).
