REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT: AMERICAS Laura Catena and her ‘100-year’ plan ADVERTORIAL Acclaimed Argentine winemaker, Laura Catena, says she is delighted to have her top-end label, Nicolás Catena Zapata, sold through La Place de Bordeaux as it was part of her “100-year plan” to have the wine in the cellar of every major collector in the world. She was speaking during a recent trade launch and tasting in London of the new vintage of Nicolás Catena Zapata, which is named after her father and iconic Argentine winemaker who did so much to pioneer and put Argentina on the global wine map. © Les Williams HOSPITALITY / RESTAURANTS / BARS WHERE TO GO IN Bordeaux CLUBS / EVENTS / SHOPPING / CULTURE La Brasserie Bordelaise: a city institution Nicolas Lascombes La Brasserie Bordelaise Hall 1 / Stand A91 Nicolas Lascombes, owner of La Brasserie Bordelaise and seven other restaurants in Bordeaux, explains why he decided to bring one of the city’s most popular names to the Restaurant area at Vinexpo, run in partnership with CIVB. Tell us about La Brasserie Bordelaise? It was the first restaurant I opened in Bordeaux and I wanted to offer the best cuisine of South West France and only work with local producers to offer typically Gascon dishes. I also wanted to have a restaurant that had a strong affinity with the winemakers in Bordeaux. In fact they were my first customers as they would stay for lunch or dinner after delivering their wines. That connection with wine is clearly very important to you? Absolutely! We are here in Bordeaux. We want to be part of the family of Bordeaux wine and we have built up many great friendships and partnerships with local producers. Over 90% of our wines are from Bordeaux. We also have a close association with the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB or Bordeaux Wine Council). We want to represent Bordeaux in everything we do from our local food, fish and meat producers to our wines. About 70% of our customers are local families and businesses which is very important to us. I ALSO WANTED TO HAVE A RESTAURANT THAT HAD A STRONG AFFINITY WITH THE WINEMAKERS IN BORDEAUX. Your connections with Bordeaux producers has gone so far as to open restaurants at some châteaux? Yes, we are working with a number of producers and have a restaurant within Château Guiraud in Sauternes, Châteaux La Dominique, a Grand Cru Classé of Saint- Emilion and Châteaux Marquis de Terme in Margaux. Tell us about the Brasserie Bordelaise restaurant you have at Vinexpo? It is exactly what we offer at the restaurant. We have chicken from the Médoc, fish from Arcachon and our beef comes Burgundy. We are working with the CIVB to offer all our guests free wine from Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur to try with their meal. We want our guests to be able to discover the diversity of wines in Bordeaux that go well with our food. Bordeaux producers exhibiting at the show can also bring wines to share with their customers during the meal. Just like we do at the restaurant in Bordeaux. We have been very busy every day. Which places would you recommend visitors discover in Bordeaux? Go to La Place de la Comedie and enjoy a glass of Bordeaux wine in front of the Grand Theater. Or go to the wine bar at the offices of the CIVB. You must also go to the St Michel market. It is where chefs and restaurants go to get their fresh vegetables, meat, cheese and all their local produce. vinexpodaily.com VINEXPO DAILY / DAY 3 / WEDNESDAY 15 TH MAY 2019 19
