A High Density IRND for Long Exposure
The Firecrest IRND 16 filter was developed as a direct response to demands of
the world’s top long-exposure photographers. This filter uses the new Firecrest
IRND coating technology to produce a super-dark ND filter that is both very
neutral and blocks infrared contamination. 16 stops is the most popular
density for artists like Joel Tjintjelaar, who typically make exposures of five to
eight minutes. This popular technique is the desired exposure time for
creating cloud streaking and for removing ripples from water.
Development of this filter represents a genuine technological challenge. With
a filter factor of 16, the light entering the filter is 65,536 times the amount of
light actually passing through it. Meaning that any variance from neutrality
across the entire spectrum will be amplified as color shift and contamination.
Early attempts at dyeing a 16 stop filter were unsuccessful, but Formatt-
Hitech’s groundbreaking new Firecrest technology finally allows a filter this
dense to be produced successfully. Even at 16 stops, this filter is far more
neutral than our competitor’s 10 stop offerings.
About Firecrest
Firecrest IRND is a revolutionary new type of infrared-attenuating neutral
density filter from Formatt-Hitech. Firecrest IRND is a quantum leap
improvement over all previous generation ND and IRND products and
represents the technological state of the art in scientific light modification.
Firecrest is a radical departure in how ND filters are manufactured. Previous
generation NDs were made by dyeing resin. The resin filter was then offered
bare as a resin filter, or sandwiched between two pieces of glass and offered as
a glass filter. Firecrest is not a dyeing process. Rather, Firecrest is a 15 layer
multicoating process that is applied directly to the glass though a vacuumformed,
hard-coated, electrolytic process. In layman's terms, it’s analogous to
anodizing on a glass surface. Firecrest filters are anti-reflective and extremely
flare resistant, which increases contrast and visual acuity in challenging
lighting conditions. Firecrest filters are also hydrophobic and scratch-resistant.
