Our Strategy
We believe calling Tāmaki Makaurau home is something
special, but we know that is not everyone’s reality.
That is why, as we work towards
realising our vision of Auckland
becoming the world’s most active
city | Tāmaki Makaurau – te tāone
ngangahau rawa o te ao, we take an
equity approach in everything we do.
Priority groups
Our Strategic Plan 2020-2024 recognises
inequities, acknowledging tamariki and
rangatahi living in low socio-economic
areas, Māori, those with disabilities, girls,
and those of Chinese, Indian and Pacific
ethnicities. We are pragmatic about the
limitations we have with resourcing and
because of this, being clear and focused
on these target groups is important.
Areas of focus
The role we are entrusted to play sees
us focus on a number of specific areas,
including Leadership and Advocacy;
He Oranga Poutama; Korikori – schools
and kura; Youth Sport including Coach
Development and Good Sports®; Sector
Support; Women and Girls, including
HERA – Everyday Goddess ® ; Insights
and Evaluation; and Spaces and Places.
Results
A range of results are detailed in this
report but significant areas of progress
include:
Healthy Active Learning: Aktive
is privileged to lead the design and
Aktive has been a significant partner in assisting North
Harbour Softball manage the minefield of COVID-19
and the lockdowns of last year ensuring we were still
able to ensure our membership could participate
during the shortened season. On top of this, the
support from Aktive through coach education and
development through to funding within our school and
community programmes has been hugely beneficial
to the significant growth we are now seeing in softball
in the North Harbour region. We thank Aktive for
their ongoing support and look forward to continuing
this relationship to ensure we are delivering the best
outcomes for our clubs and communities.”
- David Gillanders, Operations Manager, North Harbour Softball Association
Communities of Activity
Tāmaki Makaurau is vast. You could fit
New Zealand’s 12 most populated cities
(excluding Auckland) into our region and
because of this, it is not practical for
Aktive and our System Build Partners
CLM Community Sport, Harbour Sport,
Sport Auckland and Sport Waitākere to
be everywhere.
Instead, we work to understand deeply
the communities we have across the
region, and we have identified where
our target groups are most prominent.
Communities of Activity are the result
of this work, and these are where the
people reside who we need to work
hardest for, where we need to serve to
start to shift the physical activity levels
in Tāmaki Makaurau into the future for
the benefit of both current and future
generations.
Aktive is proud to be supporting other
regions around Aotearoa undertake a
similar process to support the targeting
of their mahi to achieve the greatest
possible impact.
The synergy between WISPA and Aktive remains strong
and we are thrilled to be reaching more wāhine and
kōhine in the Tāmaki region through each collaboration.
As a charity partner for the ICC Women's Cricket World
Cup, WISPA delivered a young women's leadership
workshop for 65 school-aged girls across Aotearoa.
Aktive’s partnership was crucial to the success of this
series and we look forward to working with them on
future initiatives that lift women and girls in the sector.”
- Rachel Froggatt, Kaiwhakahaera Matua | Chief Executive Officer, Ngā Wāhine
Hākinakina o Aotearoa | Women in Sport Aotearoa (WISPA)
implementation of Healthy Active
Learning across Tāmaki Makaurau in
200 primary and intermediate schools,
including more than 140 decile 1-4
schools. These schools receive
dedicated support from a workforce of
highly skilled Advisors and Community
Connectors employed CLM Community
Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland
and Sport Waitākere. This workforce
provides individualised support to
schools and kura that encourages the
creation of healthy and active learning
environments, and better connection to
their local communities.
Implementing Healthy Active Learning
alongside the education sector
throughout the COVID-19 pandemic
has had a significant impact on intended
plans and approaches. Despite this,
pleasing progress across Healthy Active
Learning outcomes has been made.
The workforce has been resilient and
innovative in how they have approached
their work alongside schools, ensuring
all engagement and support was
focused on assisting schools to navigate
their ever-changing and complex
environments.
A strength of Healthy Active Learning is
the value proposition which deliberately
places the needs and wellbeing of
tamariki at the centre of the ‘why’ – this
has meant that the workforce has been
able to be responsive to the needs of
schools and their local communities.
Spaces and places: we are focused on
ensuring all Aucklanders have ongoing
equitable access to a network of fitfor-purpose
play, sport and recreation
facilities by bringing key partners
together to strategically plan, advocate
for investment and deliver an appropriate
network across the region. We have
supported the sector to achieve better
funding outcomes, prioritised projects
for funding and we are working with
Auckland Council and the Ministry of
Education to agree policies for facility
co-investment and community access
to school facilities.
We are leading the development
of evidence-based approaches to
regionwide facility planning, investment,
renewal and maintenance. We are
also working with the sector to identify
facility shortfalls and local, sub-regional
and regional priority projects. This sees
us engaging with key sector funders
to ensure integrated investment
decisions and investigating alternative
funding practices.
2022 and beyond
Aktive is committed to making
Tāmaki Makaurau the most active city
in the world. We are proud to be
fostering existing relationships and
forging new relationships, and working
collaboratively to help Aucklanders to
be healthier, happier and more
connected to other people.
