Water Skills for Life is all about
providing children with life skills
to keep them safe in, on and
around the water. Over 1.38 million
lessons have been delivered to date
impacting school-aged tamariki
across Tāmaki Makaurau since its
inception in 2011.
In partnership with our System Build
Partners CLM Community Sport, Harbour
Sport, Sport Auckland, and Sport
Waitākere, Aktive coordinates Water Skills
for Life funding for:
• Decile 1 to 6 schools, years 3 to 6
students
• Kura Kaupapa Māori, all year level
students
• Specialist (Disability) Schools (deciles
1-10), all year level students.
This year has seen significant Water Skills
for Life results, despite the challenges of
COVID-19:
• 88 schools/kura (15 new) with 17,244
tamariki expressed interest for 2021/22
delivery, demonstrating schools/kura
recognise the importance of participation
in Water Skills for Life lessons

40 teacher/kaiako responses
from 14 schools/kura showed:
• 90% of teachers/kaiako
rated overall communication
around Water Skills for Life as
very good or excellent
• 90% of teachers/kaiako
rated overall quality of
instructors as very good or
excellent
• 90% of teachers/kaiako
rated overall quality of
the Water Skills for Life lessons
as very good or excellent.
Provider feedback
30 school/kura specific
responses received by 14
providers showed:
• 97% satisfaction with
school/kura communication
• 97% satisfaction with
tamariki engagement
• 87% satisfaction with
teacher engagement.
• 59,238 Water Skills for Life lessons
delivered to 10,176 tamariki from 48 decile
1 to 6 schools (15 new) and 1 kura (1 new)
• Delivery from 14 providers and 104
qualified instructors.

Provider meetings
Aktive met with 17 providers that currently deliver or will be
delivering Water Skills for Life lessons, with findings showing:
• 76% of providers fully understand the qualification
requirements for Water Skills for Life instructors
• 100% of providers fully understand the health and safety
requirements for delivery of Water Skills for Life
• 76% of providers fully understand the assessment and
attendance criteria for database entry of Water Skills for Life.
