Aktive Annual Report 2021/2022 9
2021/22 has also enabled us to explore
new partnerships and funding streams.
A great example being the new twoyear
partnership with Vodafone New
Zealand, Aktive, CLM Community Sport,
Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland and Sport
Waitākere with a focus on volunteers. We
are energised to advance ideas such as
this into the future to help to support the
achievement of our vision of Auckland
becoming the world’s most active city.
At the core of our mahi are our people
– informed, enthusiastic and committed
to the sector they exist to serve and
our ambitious vision. We acknowledge
and thank our team for their unwavering
contribution, particularly through the
unsettling times of COVID-19 which
demanded an immense amount both
professionally and personally. We would
also like to acknowledge the Aktive Board
for its strategic guidance and support
which is valued and appreciated.
We would like to acknowledge the wide
variety of sector partners, including CLM
Community Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport
Auckland and Sport Waitākere that we
have the pleasure of working with. These
organisations are many and diverse and,
whether focussed on sport, recreation,
community, play, disability, or education,
their roles and how we work together is
vital for success in Auckland. We look
forward to fostering and developing these
relationships, as well as new relationships,
into the future.
As our 2021/22 financial year draws
to a close, we look forward to continuing
to maximise play, active recreation and
sport opportunities for Auckland and
Aucklanders. Although the opportunities
ahead are immense, so to are the
challenges. That’s why our unwavering
equity lens and a focus on strategic
partnerships enabling collective and
focused actions will be key. Through
this approach, our vision of Auckland
becoming the world’s most active city has
the greatest potential.
MESSAGE FROM SPORT NEW ZEALAND
He pānui no Ihi Aotearoa
It has been a pleasure to watch
Aktive continue their commitment
towards the vision of being the
world’s most active city, helping
their people and communities lead
more active lives.
Tāmaki Makaurau has, once again,
experienced a year impacted by
COVID-19, with over 100 days spent
in lockdown. Aktive has shown
strong leadership throughout this
time, supporting their network and
distributing COVID-19 relief funding
to help sustain organisations and the
physical activities they deliver.
Aktive is a longstanding and
important partner of Sport New
Zealand and we value their regional
leadership of programmes and
initiatives which support our vision
of Every Body Active.
An example is Healthy Active
Learning – a joint initiative from
Sport New Zealand and the
Ministries of Health and Education
which is now in more than 130
schools and kura across Tāmaki
Makaurau.
Throughout COVID-19 the
Healthy Active Learning teams in
Auckland have supported schools,
kura, and communities to enhance
the wellbeing of tamariki, helping
them to be able to return to some
normality. In Ōtara, a former
testing centre was turned into
the Manaakitanga Fun Festival
offering tamariki in an area hard
hit by COVID-19, a reprieve from
the interruptions of the pandemic
with obstacle courses, circus skill
workshops and coaching sessions
with rugby league stars.
Aktive has also led the delivery of
large amounts of funding through
Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa. At
times this has proven difficult due
to the extended lockdown in the
region, but their proactive approach
to this fund has been extremely
effective in helping get kids back up
and moving.
A personal highlight of my own
year was the chance to spend
time with the organisation’s board,
visiting areas in the region and
seeing at a community level the real
impact this funding is having on
the physical activity of tamariki and
rangatahi.
Finally, I would like to
acknowledge Jennah Wootten and
her leadership team. They have led
the organisation through the ongoing
challenges of COVID-19 and done
an excellent job of building key
relationships across the region and
sector, as well as making a strong
contribution to the new national
Regional Sport Trust Network
leadership group.
I look forward to following the
success of their initiatives and the
influence Aktive is having on helping
the Auckland region to be more
physically active.
