Inleiding INLEIDING BIOGRAFISCHE SCHETS G.H.M. <strong>Holt</strong> (1904 – 1988) begint zijn opleiding tot architect aan de ‘School voor bouwkunde, versierende kunsten en kunstambachten’ in zijn geboorteplaats Haarlem in 1923. Wanneer de school in 1926 opgaat in de MTS, besluit <strong>Holt</strong> het architectenvak verder in de praktijk te leren. Hij gaat als leerling aan de slag bij verschillende Amsterdamse Schoolarchitecten, het langst bij Jan Boterenbrood (1886 – 1932), en vestigt zich in 1929 als zelfstandig architect in Amsterdam. Gerard <strong>Holt</strong>, afkomstig uit een progressief katholiek milieu, sluit zich al vroeg aan bij de verenigingen van moderne architecten De 8 en Opbouw. <strong>Holt</strong> onderhoudt wel veel contacten in katholieke kring: zijn opdrachtgevers hebben veelal een katholieke achtergrond. Hij is van 1946 tot 1951 redactielid van Katholiek Weekblad, maar voelt zich beter thuis bij de denkbeelden van Forum, een discussieplatform voor alle <strong>Nederlands</strong>e architectuurstromingen, en zit van 1948 – 1955 in de redactie. Eén van <strong>Holt</strong>’s eerste moderne bouwwerken is het openluchtzwembad (1932 – 1935) voor Stoop’s Bad in Overveen. Dit betonnen buitenbad met bijgebouwen vormt de uitbreiding van het binnenbad uit 1925 naar ontwerp van Ed. Cuypers. Zijn sympathie voor het moderne bouwen leidt in 1947 mede tot zijn aanstelling als buitengewoon hoogleraar aan de afdeling Bouwkunde van de Technische Hogeschool in Delft. Samen met Van Lohuizen, Van Beusekom en Van Eesteren behoort <strong>Holt</strong> tot de eerste generatie ‘modernen’, die in Delft lesgeeft. Hij blijft tot 1969 in functie. <strong>Holt</strong> speelt een belangrijke rol bij de veranderingen in de katholieke kerkbouw na 1945. Gebruik van eenvoudige materialen en het weglaten van kostbare uiterlijkheden, zonder verlies van waardigheid van het kerkgebouw, staan hierbij centraal. Voorbeeld hiervan is de St. Josephkerk te Amsterdam (1941 – 1950). Eind jaren ’50 ontstaat de behoefte de parochianen ruimtelijk meer bij het altaar te betrekken, wat zichtbaar is in de Pastoor van Arskerk in Haarlem (1958 – 1961), maar vooral in de Amsterdamse Verrijzeniskerk (1958 – 1961), waar de parochianen het altaar aan drie zijden omringen. <strong>Holt</strong> werkt vanaf 1945 veel samen met B. Bijvoet (1889 – 1979), vooral op het gebied van theaterbouw. Het duo realiseert de schouwburgen in Tilburg (1953 - 61) en Nijmegen (1955 – 1961) en de culturele centra van Apeldoorn (1961 - 1965), Tiel (1967 – 1969) en Winterswijk (1968 – 1969). Bijvoet en <strong>Holt</strong> slagen erin de afstand van het publiek tot het toneel kleiner te maken door de schouwburgzaal uit te voeren in schelpvorm, waarmee een ondiepe brede zaal ontstaat. Grote glasvlakken in de gevels nodigen het publiek bovendien uit het gebouw te bezoeken. Hun ontwerp voor een Operagebouw in Amsterdam (1961 – 1976) wordt niet uitgevoerd. De opdracht komt terecht bij de schoonzoon van <strong>Holt</strong>, architect Cees Dam, die samen met Wilhelm Holzbauer het Stoperagebouw in Amsterdam (1979 – 1988) realiseert, dat stadhuis en muziektheater combineert. ARCHIEF Deze lijst geeft een beschrijving van de verschillende stukken in het archief <strong>Holt</strong>, met in de kantlijn het aanvraagnummer waarmee de stukken kunnen worden aangevraagd. Ook staat het oude aanvraagnummer vermeld. De lettercodes bij deze oude aanvraagnummers zijn ontleend aan de administratie van <strong>Holt</strong>. In deze plaatsingslijst zijn de volgende gegevens beschreven: aanvraagnummer, plaats, adres, omschrijving, jaar, (niet uitgevoerd), motto etc. Achterin is een index op plaatsnaam opgenomen, die verwijst naar de aanvraagnummers. Het is raadzaam deze index te gebruiken om sneller te zoeken naar documenten met betrekking tot één project, aangezien tekeningen en andere documenten met betrekking tot één project regelamtig op meerdere plaatsen in de plaatsingslijst onder verschillende werknummers voorkomen. 2
