FOREWORD
Dear,
Reflecting on the past year, we at Mobile School are proud of our growth and the impact we have made. By 2023, with the launch of new
mobile schools in Colombia, Nepal, South Africa and Türkiye, we have expanded our presence to 37 countries. Each new project brings us
closer to more vulnerable children who we can help discover and develop their potential.
In line with our mission to provide educational support, last year we also invested significantly in the development of new toolkits such as
‘All Children All Right(s)’, ‘Trauma Sensitive Youth Work’ and ‘Financial Literacy’. These toolkits are designed to support our Mobile School
partners and all others working with vulnerable children and youngsters. They include a range of educational materials, training, and much
more, designed to strengthen the capacities of supervisors and educators in their daily interactions with youth.
In addition, StreetwiZe experienced significant growth this year, a development we are particularly pleased with. This growth not only
provides greater financial leverage to our Streetsmart projects, but also a lot of direct impact. Sales of experiential leadership programmes
has also increased. In these programmes, we bring business participants together with people from different walks of life - including street
children, youth in juvenile detention centres, refugees in shelters and prisoners - in a setting designed so that everyone learns from each
other, and people grow together. The design of these programmes illustrates our commitment to keep innovating, breaking down barriers
and building bridges between actors in society who together can create the waves that lead to much-needed systemic change.
The commitment and passion of colleagues, volunteers and partners drive all this. As a team, we inspire each other to continue unabated
to realise our raison d’être: Building a world where every talent can grow and prosper.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Mobile School.
Master Trainers
StreetSmart Wheels partners
Global
2023
Following a successful 2022, during which
the StreetSmart Wheels network continued its
recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic’s
impact, the positive momentum persisted
throughout 2023. This year, our team of international
master trainers started up four new
mobile school projects in Colombia, Nepal,
South Africa and Türkiye and transferred to older
mobile schools to new projects in Colombia
and Kenya.
The first project of the year was started in Armenia,
Colombia, as our partner Tejiendo
Sueños de Esperanza eagerly embraced the
mobile school to serve the slum areas surrounding
the city. In Nepal, our local partner
SathSath, with the support of their UK partner
Toybox, launched a mobile school in the capital
Kathmandu to reach out to the many working
children on the streets. Meanwhile, Inanda,
a small but very street-based organisation in
Durban, South Africa, successfully implemented
their mobile school project in the Bhambayi
township, focusing on out-of-school children
of migrant laborers in the community. Lastly,
our local partner ISSDA introduced a unique
mobile school in a container camp in the city
of Adiyaman, Turkey, responding to the educational
needs arising from the terrible earthquake
that hit southern Turkey and Syria in
February.
In addition to the four implementations, the
Wheels team strategically invested in exploring
new partner organisations to ensure the continued
growth of the Wheels network in 2024.
Partnership prospections were therefore organised
in Kenya, Cameroon, Argentina, Brazil, and
Guatemala, with some expected to result in new
implementations next year.
Beyond prospections and implementations,
the team conducted four follow-up visits for
active partner projects in Kenya, Ethiopia,
Mexico, and Greece. Throughout 2023, over
150 youth workers received training from our
global team of StreetSmart Wheels trainers
during these various expeditions. The numerous
StreetSmart Wheels expeditions coincided with
increased mobile school activity within our partner
network. Compared to the previous year, there
was substantial growth in both the number of
sessions and children reached. In total, the network
organized 2,803 sessions, reaching 66,591
children - a result that steadily approaches pre-
COVID era achievements.
Global
2023
In 2023, StreetSmart Impact was actively
used by a range of organisations, including
Habbekrats, the municipality of Evergem, vzw
Lejo Aalst, Overkop Genk and 19 StreetSmart
Wheels partners. StreetSmart Impact allows
youth workers to monitor activities and participants
easily, as well as the personal development
of children and youngsters under their
care.
Feedback from our clients has been very positive,
with many recommending our tool to
fellow youth workers for the tool’s eficiency and
user-friendliness. In an interview about their
experience with the StreetSmart Impact tool,
Habbekrats, a Flemish organisation, stated
the following: “A big plus is that StreetSmart
Impact allows to adapt both the structure of
StreetSmart Impact and the terminology to
each organisation’s way of working”.
Over the year, we hosted 7 demos and 10
integrated workshops to introduce new users
with the application and the web platform.
Each partnership starts with an intake call and
a detailed demo to ensure StreetSmart Impact
is aligned with the needs of the organsiation.
Following a positive assessment, a three-hour
onboarding workshop is provided. During this
workshop, StreetSmart Impact is adapted to
the organisation’s workflow and youth workers
are provided with practical training on both
the app and the web platform, enabling them to
integrate it into their daily activities easily.
Five organsiations opted to begin a one-year
trial of StreetSmart Impact, to explore its capabilities
and the potential benefits for their teams
and the youngsters they support. Organisations
included are Jongerencentrum Bouckenborgh
VZW, Overkop Mechelen, Welzijnsregie Mortsel,
Dienst Vrije Tijd Jeugd Willebroek and Progetto
Esperanza Italia Esproit.
Clients can receive support through the FAQ
section, the user manuals or by reaching out directly
to the StreetSmart team. Additionally, we
launched two new learning programmes on our
learning platform StreetSmart Learn, desgined
to teach users the basics of StreetSmart Impact
and how to customise the platform to meet
their organisational needs. Available in four
languagues, these learning programmes ensure
2023
In 2023, our team continued to innovate and
expand our educational offer for youth workers,
building upon the solid foundation laid in
the previous years. Recognizing the evolving
needs of our target group, we produced and
uploaded 13 new videos focused on children’s
rights games and financial literacy. These
resources, available on YouTube and
StreetSmart Play, serve as important tools for
educators looking to integrate these themes
into their youth work interventions. Due to the
demands and the new mobile school partners
in the StreetSmart Wheels network, we also
translated part of our educational offer into
Nepalese, Zulu and Turkish.
We uploaded also 77 new games and energizers
to StreetSmart Play, centered on Children’s
Rights, alongside 25 of our “older” games. We
also introduced 4 new games related to financial
literacy and 6 innovative games from our
StreetwiZe Connected Leadership expedition
with business leaders from different companies
in the Red Cross Centre for asylum seekers
in Pelt and with Exellys in the Youth Detention
Center De Zande, enriching our online platform
with diverse games and methodologies.
Our efforts showed remarkable growth in
StreetSmart Play’s user engagement. In 2023,
the platform welcomed 9756 users, reflecting
a notable increase from the previous year. These
users generated 37080 page views across
12294 sessions, with a significant portion (5443
sessions) lasting over 10 seconds. The data
reveals a small increase in user interaction, with
an average of 3.22 pages viewed per session.
The platform’s expanding reach was further
evidenced by 422 new sign-ups and a substantial
rise in manual downloads to 2359, underscoring
the platform’s value to our community.
The ongoing expansion and adaptation of our
offer underscore StreetSmart’s commitment
StreetSmart Learn is our free, online learning
platform designed to support the professioanl
development of youth workers, educators and
social workers. The platform, launched in 2022,
offers a wide range of learning resources, including
online courses, programmes and good
practices. Upon completion of a course or a
programme, participants are awarded a
certificate. Currently the platform hosts 97
programmes and 559 courses available in
English, Spanish, French and Dutch.
In 2023 several new training programmes
and courses were added to StreetSmart Learn.
Notably, we added six trainings focused on
children’s rights, developed in collaboration with
Uit De Marge, ARSIS and e.p.a. These training
programmes range from basic understanding
of children’s rights to practical approaches for
youth workers, educators and social workers
to engage with children and duty-bearers on
these rights.
Recognizing the critical importance of financial
literacy in today’s world, we’ve also launched a
dedicated training programme that dives into
the essential pillars of financial literacy. This
course aims to equip youth workers with the
knowledge to instill financial awareness and
responsibility in young minds.
In addition to these new topics, we’ve enriched
our existing programmes with the latest good
practices, enhancing the overall learning experience.
We’re also thrilled to introduce a specialized
training programme focused on the StreetSmart
Wheels methodology. This module offers a deep
dive into our innovative outreach materials,
guiding users on organising impactful activities
Fundamentals of Financial Literacy Toolkit
StreetSmart Team
Khazana Foundation
Co-creation of educational
materials
Leuven / Belgium
2023
In May 2023, the StreetSmart team started a
collaboration with the Khazana Foundation. The
Khazana Foundation aims to help children become
functional economic citizens by helping
them understand finance, provide basic skills
and show how the financial system works and
how to navigate within it. Many members
of the foundation are still employed by ABN
Amro Bank, bringing extensive expertise in the
banking sector and a deep understanding of
financial literacy concepts. Through the fusion
of the Khazana Foundation’s knowledge and
StreetSmart’s expertise in non-formal education,
the Fundamentals of Financial Literacy
toolkit was developed to offer youth workers a
robust introduction to the world of finance.
Throughout the project, two educational posters
were created. The first, named the “Money
Matters”, is a discussion poster presenting over
65 situations related to the five essential pillars
of financial literacy: earn, spend, save, invest,
and protect. This framework aids youth workers
in breaking down the concept of financial literacy
for their target group. By exploring various
situations and engaging in basic budgeting
exercises, youngsters have the opportunity
to reflect on their financial habits. The second
poster in the toolkit is the collaborative “Payday
Pioneers” board game, requiring players to collaborate
to manage their limited financial resources
throughout the month. The game aims to
apply the theoretical concepts from the “Money
Matters” poster in a more practical setting.
In addition to the two educational posters, the
team developed a training programme consisting
of three courses on the basics of financial literacy.
The first course focuses on defining financial
literacy, while the second course emphasizes the
role of youth work in educating children about
finance. The third and final course serves as a good
practice example, showcasing the programmes
and methodologies of the Khazana Foundation
and their partner in Mumbai, India.
To date, the new toolkit has undergone testing with
youth workers in India, Ethiopia, and Cameroon.
Over the upcoming months, the team plans to
continue disseminating the toolkit among active
Wheels partners and the broader youth work network.
The official launch of the Fundamentals of
Financial Literacy toolkit took place during a live
and two webinars at the beginning of 2024.
Our Trauma Informed Youth Work Project,
launched in September with the support
of Erasmus+ (co-funded by the European
Union) and in collaboration with partners from
Belgium (Minor Ndako), Greece (Solidarity
Now), and Romania (Save the Children
Bucharest), aims to develop a culturally sensitive
toolkit to equip youth workers worldwide
with the necessary tools and knowledge to
support youth facing trauma effectively.
Within this toolkit, we will create 10 educational
posters, 60 games related to trauma-informed
youth work, 10 audio stories and instructions
and 5 online training programmes. All translated
to English, French, Spanish, Dutch. All audio
stories and instructions will also be available
into Romanian, Greek, Farsi and Ukrainian.
In 2023, significant progress was made. Next
to some monthly project meetings and an
online work session, we met in November in
Greece with all project partners to have three
days of brainstorming, designing and writing
out concepts and audio stories for the toolkit.
By the end of 2023, the concepts for five overview
posters were developed, with two already
illustrated. Additionally, five audio stories and
six audio instructions were drafted and tested,
alongside the initiation of a training programme
focusing on Secondary Trauma and
Self-Care for Youth Workers.
Looking ahead to 2024, our objectives are clear.
We will continue the design of the remaining
posters, record the audio stories and instructions,
and develop a game manual to accompany all
posters. Translation of all materials into required
languages will ensure accessibility across diverse
regions and cultures. Additionally, we will prioritize
the completion of training programmes on
trauma and its effects, trauma-informed practice,
play-based activities for trauma healing, selfcare,
and stress management.
Throughout both years, regular testing and
refinement of materials will be conducted in
collaboration with project partners and focus
groups of children and youth. By sharing all
resources on our online platforms like
StreetSmart Play and StreetSmart Learn, we aim
to disseminate our toolkit globally, reaching
youth workers worldwide and making a tangible
impact on the lives of vulnerable youth.
of a new educational toolkit focusing on
music and arts, in close collaboration with the
Tomorrowland Foundation. The Tomorrowland
Foundation has supported us for several years
already through the funding of new mobile
schools, and now has expanded its support by
co-creating this new toolkit with us.
The aim of this toolkit is all about engaging
children and youngsters to think and talk about
music, arts and the Live - Love - Unite values of
Tomorrowland.
Additionally, all DJs will give the youngsters a
challenge to harnessing their creative talents
and fostering their reflection on these values.
Illustrator Gijs Vanhee is collaborating with us to
bring these two new posters to life.
The launch of the toolkit is planned before
Tomorrowland Belgium 2024, after which we
will focus on distributing the toolkit through our
StreetSmart network, Belgian schools and the
global youth work sector.
Leuven / Belgium
2023
The toolkit will include two new educational
posters and 12 videos, produced in cooperation
with notable Tomorrowland DJs such as Armin
van Buuren, Lost Frequencies, NERVO, Afrojack,
Gordo, to name a few. The first poster will depict
the Tomorrowland Festival, illustrating
around 100 situations related to music and
arts, alongside the 12 Tomorrowland DJs and
some iconic landmarks from the festival. The
second panel will outline the game’s methodology,
with three DJs sharing stories that reflect
the values Live, Love, Unite. These stories are
intented to serve as real-life examples for children
and youngsters, helping them identify
related situations on the festival poster.
2023
In 2023, StreetwiZe offered leadership expeditions
that provided participants with unique
and life-changing experiences. These immersive
journeys took participants to unfamiliar
environments like prisons and refugee centres,
challenging them to step out of their comfort
zones and boosting personal growth and leadership
development.
Central to the success of these expeditions is
StreetwiZe’s strategic partnership with organisations
deeply aligned with its core values.
These partnerships extend beyond traditional
corporate settings, encompassing diverse
locations such as a youth work organisation
in Iasi (Romania), a prison in Leuven, youth
detention centers in Beernem, and refugee
centers in Pelt and Lanaken. By collaborating
with these organisations, StreetwiZe not only
exposes participants to new environments but
also facilitates meaningful interactions with
individuals from various backgrounds. Participants
engage in team-based activities alongside
street-connected children, prisoners and
refugees, working towards assignments with
tangible social impact.
These immersive StreetwiZe expeditions yield
a quadruple win scenario. Firstly, client participants
receive comprehensive training in leadership
skills and are challenged to expand their
existing frame of reference. Secondly, refugees,
youth, and prisoners have the opportunity to
connect with the outside world, fostering a sense
of belonging and empowerment. Thirdly, partner
organisations gain visibility for the impactful
work they do. Lastly, all profits generated from
these expeditions are reinvested in StreetSmart
initiatives, supporting the organisation’s mission
to empower street children globally.
In 2023, StreetwiZe facilitated expeditions for
In 2023, StreetwiZe saw a surge in interest for
its top workshops, with Positive Focus, Storytelling
and Feedback to feedforward emerging
as the most popular. These workshops equip
participants with essential skills applicable
across various personal and professional contexts,
leveraging growth, collaboration and impactful
communication.
Positive Focus, a cornerstone workshop,
encouraged participants to cultivate a mindset
geared towards recognizing opportunities
and amplifying positivity in their daily lives.
By shifting focus towards what works well,
individuals were empowered to navigate
challenges with resilience and creativity, ultimately
contributing to enhanced personal and
organisational outcomes. Positive Focus serves
as a catalyst for meaningful collaborations,
enabling participants to approach the world
with optimism and an open mind, a starting
point for constructive engagement and innovation.
Storytelling emerged as the second most
popular workshop, enabling participants to efficiently
convey the essence of commitment and
purpose to others. Participants were guided
in crafting narratives that articulate the “why”
behind their acts, using emotion and authenticity
to inspire and mobilize their audience.
Through Storytelling, individuals improved their
ability to breathe life into messages, visions and
missions, effectively influencing and connecting
with others.
Feedback to feedforward rounded out the trio of
top workshops, offering participants a structured
approach to providing and receiving feedback
for growth and development. By creating a culture
of constructive feedback, individuals were
empowered to use insights from past experiences
to propel future success. This workshop facilitated
meaningful dialogue and collaboration,
equipping participants with the tools to cultivate
a supportive and growth-oriented environment.
The popularity of these workshops in 2023 can
be attributed to the need for individuals and
teams to adapt, innovate, and thrive amidst
change and uncertainty. By equipping participants
with skills grounded in positivity, effective
communication and continuous improvement,
StreetwiZe enabled individuals to navigate complexities
Even though we don’t have a structured offer
for primary and secondary schools in Belgium,
we always strive to respond to schools that
ask us if there is an opportunity to learn more
about Mobile School. At primary schools, we
take the mobile school with us and let the children
play with it alongside an explanation of
what we do and why we do it the way we do it.
Last year, we visitied five Flemish schools: Sint
Cajetanus in Perk, Berkenboom Instituut in Sint
Niklaas, Sleutelhof in Rumst, De Klare Bron in
Heverlee and the primary school in Sint-Joris-
talents and strenghts of street children. In both
types of schools, we work towards the conclusion
that street children are inredibly talented,
resilient and agile and that we can learn from
them in different ways.
Taking in consideration our hybrid social enterprise
and our wish for impact on the streets,
we ask schools to contribute financially to
contribution enabled us to achieve our goals,
on several volunteering platforms like Give a
within the organisation.
To thank our volunteers for their contributions,
we host various appreciation events, including
On April 12th, we celebrated the International
Day of Street Children, focusing on advocating
for vulnerable children worldwide. We began
planning on February 22nd, with three dedicated
volunteers shaping our campaign during
six meetings, both in-person and online. The
campaign existed of an online and offline part.
As we reflect on our efforts, we are encouraged
by the impact of our advocacy but recognize that
our work is ongoing. We remain committed to
Fundraising
Leuven / Belgium
This year our annual fundraising event
#DuwMee brought together a group of over
400 enthusiastic supporters. Beyond being
a fundraiser, our #DuwMee walk plays a vital
role in bringing attention to the situation of
street-connected children and youth workers
worldwide and in raising awareness on the
work of Mobile School. Participants had the
choice of starting from different locations,
resulting in a 32 km Pro Walk starting in Leuven,
a 20 km Fitness Walk starting in Blanden, a
14 km Family Walk starting in Sint-Joris-Weert
and a 5 km Kids Walk starting in Heverlee, all
ending in the city centre of Leuven.
Along the route and at several checkpoints, the
participants were treated to refreshments, food
and entertainment, including special activities
designed for our youngest participants in
Heverlee, like face painting, circus acts and a
bouncy castle.
The event’s success was made possible thanks to
the commitment of 73 volunteers who contributed
their time and talents to a range of tasks, from
setting up the event spaces and serving refreshments,
to cleaning up everything afterwards. A
core team of seven volunteers also played a key
role in the full-scale organisation of the event.
Next year, the #DuwMee fundraiser event is
This was the last year we organised the Sidewalk Chalk Campaign in primary schools.
The campaign was stopped to focus on growing the impact of StreetSmart Wheels and the start-up of StreetSmart.
Our impact decreased in 2020 and 2021
due to COVID-19 restraints. StreetSmart
Wheels partners realised less activities
and contacts than the years before and
StreetwiZe could not deliver as much
in-classroom training.
The average quality of contacts of the
StreetSmart Wheels partners increased with
6,2% in comparison with 2014.
