Hørsholm Arboretum was established and the Forest Garden thenovertaken by this. The number of species and varieties is today about 750. The agesof the plants vary from 1 to 150 years. The plants compiled in the 1981-plantlist are selected from acomplete cataloque which is maintained by the Hørsholm Arboretum. The position of each plant is indicated by the figure at the leftmargin of the page: Lines and number in the line. The line numbersare shown on the 1981-map. Following the lines from 1 to 22 theplants are met in the same order as in the plan tlist. Underlining of afigure indicates that the author wants to call attention to the plant inquestion. An * indicates that the plant is growing at some distancefrom the path. Only plants visible from the paths in 1981 areincluded in the list (Fig. 35).Certain historical events have influenced the development of theForest Garden and its plant collection and are therefore of specialinterest to visiting dendrologists. On the background of these eventsthe following items may be set up:1. The Forest Garden is the oldest, still working arboretum inDenmark, i.e. where dendrological activities go on. Some treesand shrubs are the oldest specimens of their kind in this country.2. A considerable part of the plants, in particular conifers, wereplanted about 1890 on the initiative of Carl Hansen, professor ofhorticulture. Many of these trees were introduced from abroadand were very rare in Denmark at that time.3. During the years 1889-1968 the Forest Garden was maintained byGeorg Syrach Larsen, gardener until 1933, and his son, CarlSyrach-Larsen (1898-1979). The latter was educated in forestry,dr. agronomiae, and director of the Hørsholm Arboretum 1936-1968. He was a keen dendrologist and a great capacity on foresttree improvement. Both father and son lived in the house justinside the gate of the Forest Garden. Both of them endeavouredto conserve the valuable, old trees of the collection and, whenrenovation was necessary, they provides for fine, young plants. From about 1950 to 1965 rather many rhododendrons wereintroduced, species as well as cultivars. The rhododendron plantsthrive well favoured by the protective climate and excellent soilconditions. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to add arhododendron list to this papers. C. Syrach-Larsen retired in1968, but he remained in the house in the garden until 1975 and
